Exploring Life & Business with Bryan Brodsky of The Best Cookie PS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Brodsky.

Hi Bryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Palm Springs. My father moved from LA to Palm Springs in the late 70’s to open the Coachella Valley’s first bagel store. It started in a little shop in Palm Springs called The Royal Bagel. Eventually, the store grew into a Coachella Valley wide business with multiple locations. Growing up, I would run the cash register at the family business which eventually rebranded as Brodsky’s Bagels.

In the beginning of 2020, my wife Yesenia and I decided to start a cookie company. For the prior few months, I had been baking cookies for our friends, family, and coworkers. They loved them. As the holiday baking was winding down, our doggy Paola developed some health issues. The vet bills were an unplanned expense, and we started considering ways to generate a little extra income. At that time, it seemed obvious that our business should be the cookies. People kept saying that my cookies were the best, so we named our company THE BEST COOKIE PS.

For the next year, I was on Instagram every day, posting high-res photos of the cookies with super simple captions. Every day, I would bake a bunch of cookies, pack them up in our signature kraft-brown black-stamped bags and boxes, and drive around giving them away to everyone I encountered on the street. I would drop a bunch of cookies off to local businesses and give them away to people walking downtown Palm Springs. I had my eye on doing popup events and didn’t know where to begin. I designed and ordered an EZ-Up tent, an A-Frame sign, a couple of tables and stretchy table covers, and then started bringing cookies to local event coordinators as gifts. Then I broke my foot. I continued baking, marketing, and delivering the cookies with one foot, and in December landed our first official pop-up: The PS Vintage Market. Wow. The date of our first official pop-up was December 6th, 2020, which would’ve been my father’s 65th birthday!

Since that first market, THE BEST COOKIE PS has grown into being called ‘The Official Cookie of Palm Springs’. We have enjoyed every moment of this cookie adventure and have gathered so many new friends along the way. You can find all of our friends in CVSH: Coachella Valley Side Hustle, a networking group focused on growing small businesses into their full potential.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid lockdown, a broken foot, and uncertainty.

We started THE BEST COOKIE PS just before Covid hit. At that time, I was an IT consultant, and also worked as a server at Miro’s Restaurant. When the restaurant temporarily closed for the lockdown, it became clear that it was time to build the cookies I to a profitable business. I spent many days baking cookies, packing them up, and giving them away; feeling unsure of how everything was going to turn out. Surprisingly, Covid increased the demand for our cookies. All of the restaurants were closed, so everybody began turning to delivery services and smaller home-based businesses.

As the business was beginning to grow, the initial lockdown was lifted. Two days before returning to work at Miro’s, I broke my foot in a very gnarly way. This prevented me from walking for the next six months. I spent that whole time wheeling around on a knee-scooter, giving cookies away to people, trying to spread the word about THE BEST COOKIE PS. This is when we made our way into the PS Vintage Market.

All of the struggles we encountered made THE BEST COOKIE PS stronger. That’s how we became ‘The Official Cookie of Palm Springs’.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Fresh baked cookies. No preservatives. Simple ingredients. Real butter. Actual sugar.

Our branding is super simple and recyclable. Kraft Brown packaging with all capital black typewriter text.

Our Original Killer cookie is the top seller by far. It’s got tons of walnuts and just a few chocolate chips. So many walnuts: if you are deathly allergic, the cookie will literally kill you.

We also have flourless and keto versions of the Original Killer.

What does success mean to you?
Have a good amount of love in your life. Love your community, love your friends, and love your family.
