Exploring Life & Business with Anna Howard of AC Howard Law

oday we’d like to introduce you to Anna Howard.

Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always liked service work for children – girl scout, tutor, nanny, and ultimately became a fundraiser for underserved communities in New York City. When I realized that the foster youth we served were aided by their own personal attorney, I had a light-bulb moment. I returned to San Diego for law school with the goal of representing children in the legal system. This turned into handling custody issues in family court and helping people grow their families through surrogacy and adoption. I found my niche at the end: helping families protect the future of their children via estate planning.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I struggled with the violence and neglect built into most all juvenile dependency (aka foster care) cases. It was disheartening, and I wanted to handle legal cases that did not have my crying and upset every evening. I tip my hat to the criminal attorneys that manage these heartbreaking cases on a daily basis.

Starting my own firm was certainly daunting. I read one book about how to start and build your own practice, and dove in. Thankfully, I only had a month or two of Top Ramen dinners before the income was pouring in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I help families secure their future by creating a thorough estate plan. Parents nominate guardians of their minor children, grandparents design trusts to distribute wealth to the next generation, and homeowners put their property into trust to avoid the involvement of probate court.

I write plans that help on just at the time of death, but also in an emergency situation. Who is going to feed the dog? Where did the recipe collection go? Would the client want a risky surgery or be open to organ donation? Has the client written down the location of their email login somewhere safe? We are thorough in the preparation of the plan.

Tied in with estate planning is trust administration, probate proceedings on wills or intestate succession, and guardianships. I also help people with prenups, custody revisions, adoptions, surrogacy contracts and egg or sperm donation cases.

The secret to my success is to treat people how I would like to be treated: with respect for my financial and emotional needs with integrity, respect, and a smile.
