Exploring Life & Business with Joslynn Cortes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joslynn Cortes.

Hi Joslynn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m the founder, owner and vocal instructor at Vocal Love. Vocal Love is a Latina owned business that focuses on empowering vocalists with custom voice lessons and laryngeal massages structured for the individual and inspiring merchandise that promotes loving YOUR sound! I decided to start Vocal Love in May 2020 during the Pandemic for a couple of reasons: 1. As a professional vocalist myself, I was looking for an affordable online option to help maintain my vocal health and maintain as well as expand my vocal range to prepare for when live theatre comes back. My options were very limited. 2. Right before the Pandemic, I was performing 7-11 shows a week for eight months on a Cruise Ship singing the high belting track. During this contract, I focused in on maintaining my vocal health and spreading the knowledge to other vocalists in the cast. I really enjoyed it! 3. If not you then who? If not now then when? That was enough for me to go off of. I prayed on it with expectation and started my own business! Since May 2020, I’ve taught voice lessons and laryngeal massages virtually to vocalists in Dubai, Hong Kong and across the United States! Vocal Love has been given the opportunity to partner up with other up and coming small businesses such as “The Cabaret Corner” an online platform for artists to showcase their craft through cabaret performances founded by Erika Cruz and “Homegrown” an online platform for young artists to express themselves through dance and comedy founded by Rebekah Rickards. It has truly been a blessing seeing Vocal Love expand and really create breakthroughs with vocalists in a way they’ve never experienced before!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It takes a lot to create, run, market and advertise a business, especially as a one woman show. My BFA degree is in Performance and Voice not Business so it’s taking a lot of research on my end to make sure the business runs smoothly and operates in a manner that can keep up with competition and demand but also at a pace that I can manage physically and mentally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When I created Vocal Love, I wanted to create an affordable safe space for vocalists to express themselves. A space where you are not made to feel lesser than if you are not well versed in vocal technique, but instead a space where you feel empowered and confident enough to take your vocal health into your own hands. In my seven years of professional experience, I’ve noticed the stress people, myself included, put on their voice to impress the director, musical director and castmates during rehearsals. Sure in the moment it sounds incredible, but it doesn’t take very long before the voice starts to crumble. Not because the material is too difficult, but because the vocal health aspect is absent from our routine. Once I realized this about my own vocal routine, I got educated, put it into practice and never looked back!

Now I share my wealth of knowledge with others through Vocal Love! And that’s what sets Vocal Love apart from the rest. The fact that it was created by an experienced performer who knows exactly what it’s like to try and navigate the voice, fail, try again, fail again, gain understanding and who is constantly educating herself and intertwining her newfound knowledge into her student’s lessons. My parents instilled in me the mindset to remember where you come from and to give back when you can and with that being said, I am very proud of the growth Vocal Love has orchestrated in vocalists day to day routines and I am also proud of our expansion with the Vocal Love Shop: Merchandise with a Purpose, whose proceeds will be donated to NALAC: National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures.
