Today we’d like to introduce you to Mona Ligvani.
Hi Mona, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an Advance Practice Pharmacist that specializes in International Travel Medicine. My journey really begins with falling in love with world histories and cultures growing up. I grew up in the melting pot of Canoga Park and had friends that observed cultural traditions that fascinated me. In 2010, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Geography from UCLA. During that time, I worked as a Pharmacy Technician and decided to pursue a career as a Community Pharmacist. In 2016, I earned my Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona and followed that with a one-year Community-Based Practice Residency from USC. While a Resident at USC, I came to marry my background in Geography with my education in Pharmacy while caring for patients in the International Travel Clinic. Since 2017, I’ve built up a wonderful telehealth-based International Travel Medicine service focused on keeping travelers safe and healthy while adventuring abroad. I care for travelers before their departure, while they are abroad, and upon their arrival home. One facet of my work that is close to my heart is that a portion of each consultation fee is donated to a GlobalGiving project that the traveler selects after spending time learning what kind of help the locals may need.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m in acceptance that the road is not smooth – it’s never been. Travelle Health has been in business for nearly five years and most recently re-launched after one of the starkest struggles. Due to the COVID19 pandemic, 2020 was a very difficult year for the travel industry and a quiet time for Travelle Health. There have been immeasurable losses during the pandemic – the loss of life, of certainty, of resources – of so much. To cope with the sense of uncertainty, I took a deep dive in the mission, values, services, and care that Travelle Health aims to provide travelers and the world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Travelle Health?
Travelle Health is the international travel medicine specialty of PRSCRBD Inc. Travelle Health is a concierge telemedicine business that provides travelers with thorough and personalized care to keep them safe and healthy while abroad. Our work is focused on mitigating the risk of infectious diseases and injuries so that travelers are able to create happy and vibrant memories of their adventures. Each person’s travel and health history is assessed along with the current health trends and risks of their destination. Taking those elements in consideration, a thorough consultation and digital guide is created to help the traveler stay healthy and well. We may do that by prescribing travel-related medications, vaccines, and/or products. We may also achieve the greatest potential of staying safe by reviewing protocols and procedures that the traveler can keep in mind. What sets us apart is our continued effort to care for the traveler, even after their departure. We stay in contact with the travelers and are available to help with communication and care abroad, if necessary. What we are most proud of is our contributions to projects aimed at improving quality of life for locals in the areas that our travelers adventure to. We return a portion of the consultation fee back to the traveler in the form of a GlobalGiving giftcard that the traveler uses to help fund and follow a project they feel aligned with based on their observations during their trip. I’m also very proud of our decision to focus on one project monthly on an area of the world that our travelers do not frequent. In April 2021, our efforts we focused on helping refugee children in the war torn Syria region.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
There have been many important lessons learned to the COVID-19 Crisis. Ultimately, I’ve been reminded of how fragile we are as people. How our lives can change in an instant and how heavily we rely on the togetherness of community to make strides in healing – that means having accessible and equitable care for all people, working hard to help all people have a fighting chance to overcoming the hardships COVID-19 caused, and creating seats at the decision making table for representation of us in parts and as a whole.
