Exploring Life & Business with Mehreen Mahida of Shots By Mehreen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mehreen Mahida.

Hi Mehreen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Photography has always been something I love to do. I started out learning how to take photos so my friends and I would have cute Instagram pictures – which progressed to getting my first camera in my freshman year of high school because I wanted better quality photos. In my junior year, a classmate paid me to take their prom photos and things took off from there. I always knew I could never have a normal 9-5 job of sitting behind a desk and filing paperwork, so when I realized I could make a living off of photography, I ran with it! Since then, I’ve photographed everything from events like concerts and engagements to portrait shoots with creative concepts that I have directed, to branded shoots, to travel photography and everything in between.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not is the slightest been smooth, but I have definitely learned something new at every twist and turn. If you told me a couple of years ago when I thought I was destined to become a lawyer, that I would instead be pursuing a career in photography, I would have laughed at you. Deciding I wanted to pursue a career in photography meant I needed to learn a lot. From website designing to concept creation, it was a whole new world. Like many people in a creative field, I did not go to school for photography. So, learning what made my style of photography unique to me took a lot of free labor, trial and error, and informal education. On top of it all, I am a perfectionist when it comes to all things creative and have sacrificed quite a few nights to create my client’s vision to the T. In the end, I would not have traded my experience for anything. It all made me love what I do that much more.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in portrait photography. Whether it’s studio, couples, lifestyle, creative, branded, or whatever else you could think of, I am here to make it a reality! I love to work with clients to create a moodboard of poses, colors, styling, and dream locations so they know exactly what kind of look we are aiming for. I remember in school pictures, I was always being edited ten shades lighter than my actual skin tone or extremely orange. Sadly, the idea that editing and settings are not one skin color fits all is not yet a universal concept. So, something that was really important to me when I started building my portfolio was to make sure it was representative of everyone and to ensure everyone was being represented accurately.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk is definitely a much needed factor in achieving any goal, but especially a creative one. From raising your prices to investing in yourself to trying out a new process, everything has the ability to work in ways you never thought possible or end up being a step backward. But, it is always all about perspective. Sometimes you get stuck in the same routine and need to try something new. That “something new” may not work out, but more than likely, you’ve learned a new skill that you can apply to a different aspect of your life. Taking that step back was necessary to take two steps forward.
