Exploring Life & Business with Malory Taylor of Ojai Lingerie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malory Taylor.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a wife, mom, and Ventura County native, I saw there was an opportunity to offer a truly unique shopping experience that also embodied the essence of Ojai, California. Ojai Lingerie is a body-positive lingerie and luxury loungewear boutique. I launched Ojai Lingerie after becoming a mother in 2016. You see, for the majority of my adult life (I turn 36 this year), I hadn’t been pleased with my outward appearance. Regardless of how hard I tried to fit in, I would never fit westernized beauty standards. I didn’t feel good enough at a size 0, a 2, a 4, or a 6. The fact is, it had nothing to do with my weight and everything to do with a lack of self-love. When I became a mother to my girl, my focus shifted. As I carried her in my stretching belly, she began to heal my heart from within. I imagined her speaking to my inner child—that little girl who was inundated with information on diets and exercise and dolls whose skintones were about 20 shades lighter than her own.

I believed I wasn’t good enough because I didn’t fit a certain mold. As my girl was growing within me—helping me to claim more and more physical space in the world—I imagined her holding me tight and saying, “Mama, you don’t have to believe that anymore.” And when my girl arrived in the summer of 2016, I was able to release my need to conform, to fit myself into a jigsaw puzzle that was never made for me. My big butt, my round hips, my dark skin—they’re beautiful. It is with this same affection that I created Ojai Lingerie. I want women to feel empowered to shop consciously and feel beautiful just as they are. I believe in elevating the status of women—from the women who make the garments to the women who wear them. At Ojai Lingerie, we’re simply offering the frame, you’re already the masterpiece.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve faced a myriad of challenges since bringing this dream to fruition, but I must say that many of the daily challenges just the name of the game. As a business owner, you’re constantly solving problems and so you learn to be quite resourceful. My first major challenge was finding a location. I created a blueprint of my ideal space and ended up being off by only 40 square feet. When I found the perfect space, my second major challenge, less than a year later, was coming to the decision to close my storefront to safeguard from COVID-19. I was initially devastated, but looking back I realize I had made the right decision. I don’t think I would have gained the national attention (thanks to my feature in Oprah Magazine) if I hadn’t decided to take my business online and pivot the way I did. Currently, I’m on my third major challenge of managing my business online and a contending with cooped up pre-schooler. I’m learning how to schedule my time and prioritize my own self-care/sanity. It’s been tough but all the best things are.

Ojai Lingerie specializes in offering a curated collection of ethically-crafted, comfy lingerie and loungewear. I don’t have anything with underwire but I do carry supportive styles to fit up to a 40H. I am most proud that I managed to be featured in the Oprah Magazine last year all while homeschooling and entertaining my preschooler. I want people to know that, for me, this was never about just selling lingerie. Ojai Lingerie is about promoting self-care and love. My brand thrives on empowering women.

How do you define success?
Having more time to spend with my loved ones, empowering women, and having financial security.
