Exploring Life & Business with Joshua Rodriguez of The Heights Furniture & Patina Home LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Rodriguez.

Hi Joshua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m an Actor, Casting Associate for AHC Casting, and I’m now a small business owner for two furniture & decor online stores. It’s been a whirlwind to juggle but I love the craziness. I always say I’d rather be busy as hell than sitting twiddling my fingers! Let’s see, I’m a Los Angeles native! Born & raised in Lincoln Heights. Growing up in my neighborhood was a little tough for a gay Latino kid with big dreams. I always told my friends and family I wanted to be an actor, they all thought I was crazy. My first movie I ever saw in a theatre was Titanic and seeing it at that age made me want to be an entertainer. I knew what I was watching on the screen wasn’t real and I was so mind-boggled that they could create a make-believe life before my eyes. I was hooked! Years later, I then ended up getting accepted into a performing arts high school named LACHSA. Was late to audition for the Theatre department, so I auditioned for the dance department. Got in, learned a lot! The gay Latino kid from the ghetto didn’t know anything about ballet or jazz, so trust me I learned a lot…fast. I quickly got into the theatre and musical theatre departments as well. Loved that school, I miss it. Graduated, decided not to go to college and hit the ground running with a talent manager and whatever agency would sign me in this town. It was a true learning roller coaster. I went to a lot of random auditions, acting studios, casting director workshops, knocked on a lot of doors, had a lot of doors slam on my face, did lots of odd jobs until I finally became a SAG actor.

I served tables for the longest time at my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles named Messhall. That and being a lobby assistant at the casting office really helped pay the bills and was so flexible for me with auditions. I worked in numerous commercials and tv shows all while balancing both of those gigs. Then, pandemic hits….. I’m let go from Messhall and quickly after AHC Casting offers me a full-time position as a Casting Associate. We are one of the top commercial casting offices in the U.S. I help cast a lot of our “real people” jobs and I run sessions for all of our Spanish speaking jobs we cast. I also always have had a passion for interior decorating, so I started collecting furniture, refinishing it, and selling it during quarantine. It was a fun hobby that turned success, so I created The Heights Furniture as an online store through Instagram. @theheightsfurniture. I then teamed up with my partner Timothy Maxwell and our close friend Carol Stevens and created a more curated 70s funk to 80s/90s giltz vibe sister account named Patina Home LA. @patina_home_la. We are currently working to do more Pop ups in stores and flea markets around town all while building our presence online!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely been bumpy in all three of my careers but it’s been fun. At the end of the day, you have to have FUN, if you aren’t, you’re in the wrong field. Some of the struggles have been juggling all the business’ including finding time to source more furniture & decor, complete auditions before deadlines, casting jobs on the weekends, and time for myself really.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Heights Furniture is an online furniture & decor store ranging from vintage to modern pieces. @theheightsfurniture. It was a quarantine hobby that flourished into a business. I started refinishing furniture and posting it for sale online and it quickly became popular so I created an Instagram store account. I then teamed up with my partner, Timothy Maxwell and our close friend Carol Stevens and we all created Patina Home LA which is a more curated 70s funk to 80s/90s glitz vibe. @patina_home_la. Everything we source is carefully selected and on brand with our image. We offer delivery for a fee depending on the item and distance. We try to source as much as possible divided by the three of us, sometimes we are grateful to all be together while finding these treasures, but most of the time we are on our own. Some items are posted on both accounts depending on the style and era. Some of the items you’ll find on both accounts are: vintage glassware, handmade pottery, dining tables, chairs, coffee tables, end tables, candle holders, various lamps, vases, etc.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Having a go-getter mentality and lots of ambition & drive.
