Exploring Life & Business with Jacqueline Dotson of Butter Cosmetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Dotson.

Hi Jacqueline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
This might be the hardest question to answer because there is so much… I’m a wife and mother of four daughters. Those two roles mean a lot to me and shape so much of my everyday movement. By profession I’m a nurse, and I make it a point to go above and beyond in that because I understand the difficulty of trusting someone else with your own well-being.

Standing out from the crowd but like off to the side where no one is watching is my thing. I’ve just never been the type to want to do the things everyone else does. My mother always instilled that it was ok to be different so I took that and ran! I have this big personality and tall stature but at the same time, I’m very shy and humble.

It’s always been a goal of mine to run a business. Having something that is my “baby” that I could call mine has burned hot in me on the last ten years. My father has been an entrepreneur for as far back as my memories go and I’ve always admired his “hustle” mentality, I’m blessed to have had some of that rub off. I’ve worked so many jobs from the age of 18 till now and a lot of them were customer service based, so I have developed strength in that area. So I wanted to incorporate that into my entrepreneurial endeavors.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge that I have encountered is myself. I am very critical of my own actions and it causes me to limit my opportunities. My imagination is very vivid and I second guess that blessing a lot due to fear of being misinterpreted. Integrity means a lot to me and I’m constantly trying uphold my own. So I shy away from things that might blur how people see me. Worrying about my image holds me back though, so I’ve been actively trying to let go be true to myself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
B.U.T.T.E.R. [Beauty (is) Unbiased (and) Truly Touches Every Reflection]

Butter Cosmetics was born from me feeling unseen. I’m not a girly girl who gets dolled up daily. But when I do……. I’m doing it all. I’ve always had a hard time finding colors that complimented my dark complexion, and I knew I wasn’t the only one. So my vision for my cosmetics was to create something for everyone, rather you stand out daily or only pop out when needed.

B.U.T.T.E.R. [Beauty (is) Unbiased (and) Truly Touches Every Reflection] is an acronym I stand by. There isn’t a face on this earth that lacks beauty, so why would you leave a facial structure, hue, or skin type out when making products?

Skincare and maintenance is my latest expansion to my brand, I’m so excited to help change the stigma of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone that women of color face. Our faces glow despite that and I want to help highlight that natural beauty.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t even believe in luck. So it has no role in my life or business.

God’s Grace and timing is what I know to be real. Prayer has allowed me to avoid many obstacles and connect me to the right people and opportunities.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
