Exploring Life & Business with Brittney and Aziza of Ocean and Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney and Aziza.

Ocean and Rose was created by Aziza Turner and Brittney Derrick who met in pre-school and have been inseparable since. Together they created Ocean and Rose, a boutique shop inspired by California living. The size and age-inclusive shop got its name from the streets Aziza and Brittney grew up on. The creation of this fashion hub grew from their mutual belief that leaving curvy or small sizes out cannot sustain a community. In the same sense, leaving out clothes that their elders would be excluded from did not fit the goal in creating a community that everyone could be a part of. That’s why they select clothing that is diverse in style, fit and sizes for each season. With additional interests in fitness, literature, and finance, Aziza and Brittney aim to empower their clients and expand their business’s horizons. Through weekly newsletters about fitness, book suggestions and financial literacy tips, they encourage their customers to enrich their lives-in and outside the shop. They actively collaborate with other BIPOC small businesses and artists to build and sustain their store and community in the Los Angeles Area.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting Ocean and Rose, thankfully, has been smooth sailing. Being bestfriends has allowed us to make decisions for one another when needed. As well as take over the workload when the other needs help. We always have each other’s best interests at heart which makes working together a blessing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We specialize in size and age-inclusive clothing. We work with other BIPOC small businesses to create one of a kind items for our customers. Personally, we are really proud to incorporate our own passions into our brand. Brittney has a passion for reading and financial literacy and Aziza who just finished her first year in a Chiropractic Doctoral program is very passionate about health and fitness. Newsletters are sent weekly providing our community with tips and tricks to better themselves and others around them. Readers should definitely know our brand is excited to work together with creators and artists to formulate amazing clothes and products. As well as, our brand will always have something to offer for everyone.

What were you like growing up?
While we have been friends since pre-school our personalities and interest has always been vastly different. Aziza preferred sports, climbing gates and hated dresses. While Brittney loved dancing, playing with dolls and the color pink. Even with Aziza being more social and Brittney more reserved, they maintained a tight friendship that has lasted over 20 years.
