Daily Inspiration: Meet Ty Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Jones.

Hi Ty, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a professional hairstylist & salon suite owner born & based out of Memphis, Tn. I have been styling hair for about 4 1/2 years now & they have literally been the best of my life. Growing up, I’ve always had a natural gift of doing hair, however, society made me believe that I had to get a “real job” to be successful so I didn’t see being a hairstylist as a serious career path. After dropping out of college & working multiple dead-end jobs, I found myself unhappy & unfulfilled. I began to seek God & it’s like I had an epiphany; my purpose was to be doing hair. From that day on, I started pushed forward with creating a space for myself in the beauty industry & I truly can’t see myself doing anything else. I started out in the industry mainly doing weaves but now I have evolved into a natural hair specialist. This year I created a product line, LUX PRO, that consists of clip-in hair extensions & a soon to be released professional flat iron. I will also be hosting a business seminar to teach young entrepreneurs how to do my Luxury Silk Press Technique & give them advice on how to grow their business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once I decided that this is what I wanted to do with my life, I went hard at it. I never thought that this wasn’t for me because God had told me that it was. And he had revealed some promises to me that I believed were going to be fulfilled. Some have & some are still in the works but I’m certain that I was purposed for this. Does that mean it’s not hard? Nope! It’s extremely hard starting something new & trying to fit in. And it’s even harder being a service provider because, truthfully, people are hard to please. At the beginning of my career, I use to take criticism & bad reviews extremely hard. It would put me in such a mood & make me doubt myself. It wasn’t until I grew my relationship with God that I realized that my identity comes from him & that I’m not defined by one bad review. As long as I do my very best, he will take care of the rest.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Here in my home town, I am most known for doing amazing silk press on natural hair. I do a good job if I must say so myself. LOL I am most proud of having my own flat iron line! I think that it’s so dope to be able to create an avenue for black-owned businesses in the hot tool industry. What sets me apart is I have God. And I’m not just saying that because it sounds nice nor am I insinuated that other people don’t have him but that’s what makes me different. That is what sets me apart. Day one I vowed to make God the CEO of my business & invite him into my world & day after day, month after month, & year after year, my business has continued to grow & thrive. That’s what makes me different spiritually. Practically, I make sure that I am honest & I run my business with integrity. I don’t cut corners. I educate myself. I’m always learning & adapting. I make sure that I am the best that I can be for my clients. My advice for anyone wanting to start a product line is to not let the fear of failure hold them back. If you let fear keep you stagnant then you can never be as successful as you want to be. Just do it! And if it fails, so what! Try something else! Put the work in & the fruits of your labor will pay off eventually. Galatians 6:9 says “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Don’t give up! Don’t underestimate the power that’s inside of you. You have everything you need to be successful. If you don’t think so then the “things” aren’t your problem, it’s your mindset.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very shy & timid child. Honestly, I got picked on a lot! Elementary & middle school wasn’t really a good time. I was a bit overweight so all the other kids would make fun of me. I didn’t get “cool’ until high school. I love tennis shoes and in high school, I got a job and was able to buy nice shoes. So all of my peers thought I was cool because I had a job and could buy all the nice shoes and I milked it. It was nice fit into the “in crowd” for once.
