Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Clawson.
Hi Sharon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was interested in modeling for as long as I can remember. I would always watch “America’s Next Top Model” as a little girl just dreaming to be able to do what they would. My mom put me into pageants at 11 years old and I remember having such a love-hate relationship with them. I loved meeting people and being on stage, but I didn’t love how it had an impact on my self-esteem. Being the only brown girl in the room and not being a size 2, I always felt that I stuck out like a sore thumb. As I spent years working on myself, I decided to get back into it. What gave me the confidence to give my dream a full chance is Ashley Graham’s Ted X Talk. Ever since, I’ve had such a different perspective on myself and newfound confidence. I started back up on modeling by meeting up with photographers in Sacramento, building my book for a couple of years, and decided to take the leap to move to LA.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey hasn’t been the smoothest, but I will say it has taught me a lot about myself. I oftentimes had the mental battle of whether I made the right decision dropping out of college to pursue my dream full time. I worried about being a disappointment to my mom since she had such different plans for me. Going from a nursing major and going to school for it for four years to wanting to model full-time is not something that’s traditional; especially coming from a Southeast Asian background. My first job when I moved to Southern California was at a pizza spot. And before that, I was a cook/bartender while going to school full-time. I will say I also worked some odd jobs throughout the pandemic and worked on my passion, but I can also say I’m proud I made the decision to take that leap of faith in myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a full-time model and content creator. I’m very proud to represent and be a part of a community that showcases beauty outside of the “standard” or what was taught to us all our lives. I’m even more proud to represent my Malaysian and Sri Lankan background. Being such an underrepresented community, I love making women feel seen and that they’re beautiful as they are. I’m also setting an example of breaking generational curses and being living proof that you can do anything you set your mind to.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Gratitude. I have my moments where I feel down on myself or feel like I’m not doing enough. But when I take a step back, reflect on where I was just two years ago, I realize how far I’ve come. Being grateful for the people I’ve crossed paths with; the lessons I’ve learned to see what I’m truly capable of; the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. I’m grateful everyday and still can’t believe sometimes that this is the life I GET to live.
