Daily Inspiration: Meet Samone Rankins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samone Rankins.

Samone, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am 29 years old born and raised in Los Angeles, California but I am currently staying in San Fernando Valley. I love to travel meet new people, my color personality trait is an orange so I am super active oh and I love cheerleading! It all started when I was ten years old, I needed an outlet because I was going through a tragic death in my family. My mom signed me up for a cheer team, The Pop Warner Inglewood Jets. That is where the start of my love for the sport began. As years went on, I was back and forth between cheer and dance. I pretty much joined anything that would get me out of the house and keep me busy. It wasn’t until I made the Cal State Northridge Cheer team that the love I had for this sport would turn into my passion. There was nothing like cheering at a college game, the traveling, the camps, the events. I loved it all! I loved this sport so much that I gave it 100% of my efforts becoming captain and president of the cheer team for all three years out of the four I was on the team. I began my coaching career at the age of 18 and I have now been coaching for 12 years. After having my daughter in 2015 and it being my last year of college, I wanted something bigger for myself, for my community and for my daughter to have. I have always wanted my own cheer gym ever since I started cheerleading at the age of 10 and it has morphed through the years and now, my ultimate goal is to open up a Recreational Sports Center emphasizing in cheerleading. I started Gem of Jewels Cheer and Dance program in June 2018. Currently, we are renting a practice space out of different gymnastics facilities and other all star cheer programs. My hope to open our own doors soon so that we may finally have our own facility to call home.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a gym owner, a coach and most importantly a mother in this position there are so many factors to always constantly think about that a lot of people wouldn’t normally think about. So I have to separate my task as a coach from the administrative work I have to do as an owner, as well as making sure I am present for my daughter. Many cheer gyms may have a manager, owner and a team coaches but due financial reasons, I am a 3 in 1 combo! Families have joined my gym because they either believe and trust me as a coach, word of mouth, or they seen something on social media that have caught their interest. A challenge I face is recruiting new athletes to continue to build my all-star cheer program. The difference between my business and a business that sales tangible goods is that I am providing an experience, a training, mentoring and not just a tangible item. With this experience comes commitment and sometimes it’s hard to find families and athletes that can afford it. We offer a low-cost program so all athletes can have an all-star cheer experience. Roadblocks I have also faced was starting from ground zero, I literally started all this from nothing just from my creditability and hoping people trusted me on this journey. The first two years, I invested thousands into my program just to get it off the ground because I believed in the vision I had and I wanted offer this opportunity to anyone who wanted to be apart. Once the pandemic hit, I had to figure out how to keep athletes and parents interested and us not failing due by having to move everything virtually like the rest of the world. We muscled through a different season with virtual competitions, outside practices in the park for social distances and working hard even with our mask on. With hard work and determination, we survived the pandemic and things are looking up at this moment and I am excited of the growth of this gym.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When coaching any athlete, there are so many factors in how to coach that specific age group and or level. You can get a little girl who kind of likes cheer but is mostly forced by her parent or you can get an older athlete that wants to be good but has no idea how much hard work and training it takes to get that specific goal. My goal as a coach is to literally make both of these individuals push themselves, know they are capable of those goals, build confidence and keep it fun during it all. Our cheer gym’s core values include GRIT, INTEGRITY and PASSION. I am most proud of not just being a coach that focuses on the wins but try to teach my athletes work ethics and resilience that they can carry with them outside the gym. Being the only female Black-owned All Star Program in the San Fernando Valley, I have so many athletes that commute from Palmdale, Lancaster, Los Angeles and come to Chatsworth, CA to train with me. Growing up, I didn’t have this opportunity. I did not get trained by a credentialed cheer coach until college. I have a very affordable program in the All star World because it’s not about the money to me it’s about giving everyone the opportunity to get high-quality training no matter what their economic status is, we make it work for everyone.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love collaborations and I am always ready to see how we can support each other especially in my community and highlight our talents.

I make promotion videos so anyone in media or editing can help me with certain projects to keep our imaging and social media up to date with our competitors. I am big on also setting trends as an all-star program, we make all our gym practice gear except the uniforms (we will learn that soon) to help minimize the cost for our families so anyone in designing or apparel I am always looking to collaborate in. Lastly, I plan fundraisers and events so anyone that either helps with events or can be a vendor I would love to collaborate with as well.
