Daily Inspiration: Meet Rodolfo Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodolfo Cruz.

Rodolfo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It’s a long story; I was born in Glendale, California to Mexican parents who decided they wanted to raise me in their home country, so they moved, and I grew up in Mexico City. I started playing guitar when I was around 10, right after my father died of cancer. He was an Audio Engineer. I later moved on to piano. That was when my piano teacher introduced me to my first DAW (Digital audio workstation) and my mind was blown. From there on, my passion became recording myself and piecing the recordings together to make something out of nothing. Around 2012, I won a full scholarship for a five weeks summer course at Berklee College of Music in Boston along with four other Mexican winners from a songwriting composition contest held in Mexico. Being able to come to the USA and experience how the professionals make music opened my eyes to more possibilities in my future. After I graduated high school, I moved to LA and finished an Audio Engineering degree at SAE Institute.

In mid-2015, I started working shows in LA as a live audio engineer, working my way up from intern to lead audio engineer. I did shows at the W Hotel Hollywood (Jazz Night), Luxe Hotel Downtown, BOA Steakhouse, Beverly Hilton, Sofitel, Delilah, Club Bahia, and private shows all over LA and San Diego. While I was doing that, I was also working on my own music which I released to streaming platforms through Ronin Recordings. The album is called “Hysterisis”. I was also working on private production houses as an assistant engineer that got me my first credits as a recording assistant and vocal tuning with SONY BMG and Warner Brothers Music. After three years of live sound as my main job, I decided to work in a recording studio to further my experience as an engineer. In 2018, I started interning at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood, worked my way up from intern to Assistant Engineer where I have been assisting for A-list artists and producers of all kinds since 2019.

Currently, I finished setting up my home studio where I have been providing audio restoration services, vocal tuning, mixing and mastering services online through my new website! You can check it out here: As for the future, I see myself evolving with more knowledge and growing my own business in audio, but more than that, I have a dream of eventually building a 100% eco-sustained recording/mixing/mastering analog studio.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been an easy road to success by any means; from living on the streets when I first arrived in LA, to eventually getting an office job that made me hate myself, staying awake endless nights just to make sure nobody messed up the audio equipment I was in charge of, fighting off drunk people while mixing a live band, I’ve had hundreds of gigs that never paid me or ghosted me, I’ve had to work for free for probably half or more of my professional career just to be considered an option. And ultimately losing my father, since he was my greatest inspiration and main reason I got into audio engineering and producing. But I always think of him in my moments of success and know he would be proud of how far I’ve come.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce music and I specialize in Audio Engineering. I’d like to say that I’m known for some of my music but mostly from my work as an Audio Engineer. My friends and family always refer to me as “very intense” with my work. I’ve always been keen for attention to detail and I could spend hours-even days- making sure every detail is how I want it when I’m working on a production, a mix or anything. I always bring my 110% to the task I’m performing.
