Daily Inspiration: Meet Raven D

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raven D.

Hi Raven, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It didn’t mean much until I said it out loud, but I have been interested in the art of hair for a very long time. I believe that maybe my first time actually doing a full presentable style on myself was at the age of 11. Growing up, I had family that did hair and would do my own hair which led me to go through the many righteous passages while being a young black girl. I’ve tried every hairstyle you can even imagine and my love for hair only grew more as I’ve learned how to express myself through it. I was raised by my mom who gratefully never confined me to a box and allowed me to venture out to understand and explore what made me, me. I have never realized how much of a foundation that was for me to indulge on a platform for me to create. Having the ability to create without judgment is literally one of the best things to have especially as a child and my mom allowed me to do that with my hair. Thank you mom!

Most of my learning came from YouTube and I would spend hours online looking at videos of people reviewing weaves, wigs, tools and doing various hairstyles. That didn’t limit my view of creativity because I lived in a house with my mom and my aunt who did not shy away from their creative hairstyles that I loved. My personal creativity peaked in high school and it was uphill from there. It wasn’t until I graduated college that I decided to start The Wig Dome, and I have never been more happier with a decision. This brand has allowed me to showcase my creativity on a platform that I’ve never used before.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think that many of us would love to have a pretty smooth road, but for me entrepreneurship wasn’t and still isn’t an easy one. There have been times where I have 1,000,001 things going on in my personal life which leads me to not be able to tend to my business life or vice versa. The struggle with balance has always been one that has hindered me from completely gaining control. I think over the last two years, I have gotten so much better with taking control and understanding that life happens. From financial to emotional barriers, it happens. I have not let this keep me away from what I’ve wanted to do and I refuse to start.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Wig Dome specializes in custom wig making, styling and wig sales. However, the social media presence is used for much more including teaching and informing those who find interest in wigs and hair.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As much as I love hair, I was never taught how to cornrow braid. I have let this shy me away from progressing in some potentially offered services, however I have been working to correct this! It is my shame, haha.
