Daily Inspiration: Meet Oana Molodoi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oana Molodoi.

Hi Oana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am the owner and designer at OM Drapes Design, a window treatment design boutique in Huntington Beach. I like to think that am not your usual window treatment designer … I started my business with one goal in mind, to become a role model for my daughter and show her that women can achieve anything they want if they set their mind to it. They can be successful entrepreneurs, great moms, friends, and community builders, they can be anything really.

I am Romanian and I come from a highly educated background, I have a Bachelor’s Degree in English an Executive MBA and a Master’s in Human Resources. My background is in advertising sales and marketing, but I was always drawn to interior design, to fabrics, textures and how it all works together.

In March of 2020, amidst the pandemic, my husband and I closed escrow on our first home and soon after, I lost my job. That’s when I had to figure out what my next move was: I wanted to have the flexibility to home school the kids and no one was hiring anyway 🙂

Do you believe in things that are meant to be? I truly believe that when we set out intentions an energy is created that puts things into motion. I was looking for window treatments for our new home and had a couple of failed meetings, one astronomic quote and no solution in sight. My cousin who runs a similar business in Sydney, Australia urged me to start my own business and she became my industry mentor and guide.

Two years and a half later I look back and cannot believe how much I’ve achieved, how much I’ve learned and how many homes and people I’ve touched!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to success is never smooth and if it were, there would be little opportunity to learn. I learned most from my mistakes, and every setback made me stronger and taught me how to deal with situations that arose.

One example is the supply chain: we had lots of back-ordered parts or fabrics, I had to learn how to communicate that to the clients, how to better set expectations, how to set up my process to better serve my customers.

Starting a business during Covid was both a blessing and a curse. I had requests from the very beginning, as everyone was looking to invest in their homes or moving to new ones. But contractors would get sick, workrooms were backlogged due to lack of staff, quality started dropping and that’s one thing I could not allow to happen.

I pride myself with 100% customer happiness guarantee and the quality of products and service is the most important value in my company. So in order to keep that promise I had to switch many vendors, look for the right partners and staff who would help me achieve that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to believe that what sets me apart is the right mix of qualities, just like the ingredients of a good cocktail: creativity, wits, love of work well done, dedication, great communication, attention to detail and empathy. It’s interesting how these traits are mentioned by clients in their reviews.

I specialize in drapery and soft treatments like roman shades, valances, pillows because I love the challenge of complex projects. Fabric has a life of its own and making draperies can be like art. We work with true artisans and it’s an immense pleasure when our clients understand and appreciate the value of custom-made.

We also specialize in motorized and automated interior and exterior shades and we often work with contractors on new builds to make sure the wiring is all done right from the beginning.

I am most proud of the core values I built the company on. They are my guiding light, always keeping me accountable to myself, my employees, our partners and customers, they are what sets us apart. The love of work well done is one of them, and the love of people is another.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am very proud of my Eastern European Roots and I try to integrate that into my work by importing fabrics and accessories from all over Europe: Turkey, Romania, Belgium, Italy, and Spain. A lot of the fabrics are exclusive which makes my end customers and designers feel special.
