Today we’d like to introduce you to Netta Brielle.
Hi Netta, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Singer-songwriter and actress from the Bay Area, by way of Berkeley & Oakland. I have been involved in the Arts since the age of five as I started off singing, writing poetry and doing local plays. Coming from modest means, resources weren’t always available however, my mom did what she could to nurture my talent. Plays at Berkeley’s Black Repertory Theatre, Oakland’s Fruitvale Playhouse and concert going trained me in ways to become a performer. I watched artists like Mary J Blige, Madonna, Janet & Micheal Jackson, and MC Hammer in which motivated me a great deal. I began performing at local shows and releasing music on my own when I had an opportunity to sign with Def Jam records under the direction of Shair Stewart, a Bay Area native. Unfortunately, the opportunity fell through and I went on to graduate from college when I was then offered an opportunity to sign with El Seven/Atlantic records.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road by any means however, I have learned to make my way through. I have often given up and fought off feelings of depression as this career can offer may highs and lows. I always encourage those entering in this field to simply love what you do. The love and passion will keep you in it as there may be some days you feel like running away from it all. I have suffered from a lot of loss over the years and music became my blanket, my out, my therapy. Watching my father pass from cancer, and in later years my sister being murdered in Oakland broke pieces of me that I am still trying to work through. I had a great deal of support from my family however we have had to work through so much trauma and I often felt like they see me as hope for our lives to change. In turn, I would put so much pressure on myself. I have worked so hard for the life-changing “record deal” and once I got it, it was as if new struggles arrived. I have suffered the most heartbreak from my chosen career but it has been the most gratifying at the same time, it’s really hard to explain.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a performing artist who specializes in performance, recording, songwriting and acting. I would say I’m most known for my performance style. I see myself as a rock star performer and it’s what I love most about being an artist. The energy and connection with the people is unmatched. I live on stage.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the Bay Area for the independent mindset. I have learned not only how to be an artist but how to push my own product. I believe it is important to be involved in every aspect of your career. I credit artists and managers from the Bay Area who instilled that in me.
