Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Maroon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in France. Almost ten years ago, I needed to learn English for a TV project I was on and decided to go to Florida for three months to go to school there and be fully immersed. On my flight going there, I met a man, kinda felt like love at first sight and ended up never leaving the US. I left my entire life and career behind, moved to NYC with him, got married and had a baby a year later.
Fast forward to a few years later, I was a stay at home mom and by then, we were living in LA. Having a baby made me want to hold on of time and capture every single moments with our son. With my experience working in TV I’ve always been very attracted to anything related to images. I was taking photos of my friend’s kids and they always loved it. Almost three years ago, I left my husband. I was a stay at home mom, coming from another country and never worked in the US and I didn’t know what to do. I was lost but I needed to figure something out so I decided to give photography a try. It wasn’t easy, still isn’t but I was lucky to be able to make it happen. I started working with families mostly and my work with time expended to weddings, newborn, birth… This year has been incredibly difficult, especially with school closed. I was barely able to work since I have to do it all with my son but I’m hoping my business will be able to start again once life works again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never smooth. Like any independent worker, the biggest challenge is probably to constantly find new clients. I’m very fortunate to have clients who constantly come back to me. I have clients I’ve been shooting since I’ve started and that’s probably my biggest reward. I absolutely love seeing families and kids grow.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle photographer. I specialize in lifestyle and can shoot pretty much anything that fits in that description. I like to say that my photos are a glimpse into people’s life. I’m a people lover and often feel like I can make almost anyone comfortable. I often have clients with young kids feel like it was such difficult time and that the photos will end up horrible. Most of the time, they actually end up very surprised by the result. I love kids that aren’t very cooperative because they usually end up being the best models. The less behaves the most expressive so it’s usually fun even though it requires a lot of patience!
