Daily Inspiration: Meet Maurice Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Antonio.

Hi Maurice, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a child, I was always fascinated by entertainment and the creative freedom and the ability to express yourself through art. Having a strong desire to dip into the pool of entertaining, I understood early on coming from a small town called Eutawville, the opportunities of having a large platform to showcase my talents were few and far in between. So that placed me on a path to achieve a career more practical. Still intrigued by television, I was inspired to become a doctor through one of the greatest tv shows to air. After graduating with my doctorate in pharmacy and practicing for many years, I still wanted to pursue my true passion and calling in entertainment. After much prayer and self-reflecting, I packed up my life and moved to Los Angeles to fulfill my all-time goal of creating content for tv and film.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As with any goal in life, challenges always present themselves that will either cause you to take a more scenic route or cause you to turn around. As it relates to my journey here in Los Angeles, one of the challenges I faced came with others in the industry not taking my passion for creativity serious being that I come from a medical skill set. What people fail to realize is that we all are born with gifts that tie into our true passion and calling and then some of us learn from the pool of skill sets to tap into what we feel our passion is. Another challenge I have faced is learning not to focus so much on what others are doing. We all have something unique and wonderful to offer the world, but constantly looking to the right of me and to the left of me caused me to lose focus at times.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Aside from being a licensed pharmacist for seventeen years, I am the founder of M.O.E. Productions which is an artist driven company based in Los Angeles, CA that produces and develops television, independent film, theater and animation content. Our most recognizable content is a motion comic series ‘Califia and the Timeless Sentries’ that features the first voluptuous woman of color heroic figure. I am most proud of this company and the amazing strides taken to provide opportunities for others who have a dream but are often turned down from displaying their talent. What sets me apart is the fact that I take the time to listen to everyone who has an idea. It’s important to listen to people because to a certain degree, we all want to be heard.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In order to network successfully and strategically, you must be able to build your network before you actually need it. You have to become comfortable with meeting people and cultivating relationships with no specific purpose in place. When networking, the key is to always focus on what you can give to the people you want to connect with. You do this by always probing in every conversation you have for ways you could provide value to the other person. Think about the quality of the connections you make and the relationships you build as depositing money in a bank account. All of the things you do for the other person serve as the principal. You start making withdrawals from the account in the form of getting value back from the relationship only after you’ve made enough deposits and you’ve let the principal grow enough to generate substantial interest.
