Daily Inspiration: Meet Makayla Tarae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makayla Tarae.

Hi Makayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2016 I was working full-time at NYU hospital & part-time at radio city music hall and attending York college. I was going to school majoring in nursing & minor in business. I’ve always done my own hair, as a kid I loved playing with dolls; dressing them up, doing their hair and I was the fashion police before the fashion police! A friend of mine always saw how nice my hair was & encouraged me to go further because she believed I could do it & gave me my first client. In 2018 I ended up dropping out of college & attending hair school. I then realized my job had no purpose for where I was going so I quit both jobs in 2018, and I put my full focus into hair. When I started taking hair seriously the benefits I received was unbelievable. I got approached by my first celebrity client, I participated in a showcase for upcoming creatives, I got an opportunity to be on creative shoots and my clientele was growing at a rapid rate. This was all in 2018. Because of this, is why I always knew I have to stay the course for where I was going because if I was able to obtain this in my 1st year imagine where I can go.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Its been an overall smooth journey but there are hurdles I face. Some struggles I faced was in the beginning of my career. I had people pretending to look out for me but instead it was to keep me to fulfill their dreams. I’ve made many mistakes along the way as well. But besides all of that, my biggest struggle was me vs me.

My own fear would creep in or I would be sad that I wasn’t further than what I was & I even minimized my dreams at a certain point. Or compare myself to other hairstylists on social media not realizing I’m in my own lane & my journey is my own story. So I had to boost my confidence & believe in myself more and fight off negative thoughts.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist, /hair conceptualist / creative. My hair Specialty is wigs, but I love creating hairstyles on all hair. I’m most known for my crazy ideas when it comes to hair. I want to bring art into hair all while making it look super realistic. I’m bringing my talents into the music industry to help stamp the artist’s style & give them cool creative looks of their own. I am most proud of my creativity & that’s what also sets me apart. Through the years of me doing hair I found a way to incorporate all my talents into hair artistry. What sets me apart from most is I’m really passion driven & I want to actually make a change with my art & I want to help people express themselves through fashion & their hair & do whatever their mood is. For me, it’s more than hair its art.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Yes! Anyone up & coming be YOU! Be a true genuine kind person. You will get burned, betrayed etc. but never change who you are because YOU set yourself apart from everyone else. And take time to get to know yourself because it really helps when you have a business or working with people. Always remind yourself why you do what you do.

Ask for help when needed! You can’t make it alone. & sometimes your blessings come by helping other people.

And put those in positions that you see is passion driven like YOU or those that have a dream and you can make it possible for them.
