Daily Inspiration: Meet Lukas Cuman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lukas Cuman.

Hi Lukas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from a little village in Italy not too far from Venezia. I grew up playing guitar and drums since I was seven. After graduating from High School, having always been fascinated by sound, I moved to Milano where I found a small school with a Sound Engineering Bachelor program and I fell in love with the technical side of the music industry. I spent three years there studying and working at the same time while always keeping in mind my biggest dream to work in LA. In Milano, I had the opportunity to stay side by side and learn from some of the best Italian producers, composers and engineers. In 2020, I finally decided to move to Los Angeles to attend a Certificate program at Musicians Institute where I completed it with honors and I also became an Avid Pro Tool Certified. I started searching for jobs and internships position as soon as landed. One day I met Saverio “Sage” Principini, Italian record producer and songwriter. He works with some of the biggest Italian Rockstars, Popstars and many American bands. He has this magical studio in Los Feliz called “Speakeasy Studios LA” and he asked me to join his team. Now I am the main Engineer of the studio, it was a dream coming true, for real. It’s an actual speakeasy from the late 20’s at the basement of this big Villa at the top of the Hollywood Hills. The house is of Vasco Rossi, the most famous Rockstar in Italy. In the last month, I’ve worked with Chance The Rapper, Bebe Rexha, Ultimo and Vasco himself so I can’t be happier. I had the pleasure to work in some of the best studio in LA such as EastWest, Westlake and Henson.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Can you imagine moving from a little village in the countryside of 6 thousand people to a huge one like LA? Nothing was easy at all and I didn’t know anybody here. Just the fact that if you don’t have a car, you have to walk for 30 min just to reach the nearest grocery store took me a while, plus everything is so expensive here in LA. I mean there would have been thousands of reasons to go back and stay in my town with my friends and family. But I really wanted to do it and I like to find new ways to challenge myself and that’s what drives me to do better each day.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Recording and Mixing Engineer. I work in a music recording studio where we record bands and single artists to capture the performances and mix all the music with the vocals to be ready to be streamed and sold on all digital platforms and physical supports. This is the second step in the music business chain after the production. Everyone has a laptop and a pair of speakers at home so the idea that everyone can make music on their own is actually true and it’s fantastic, but I truly believe that if you start collaborating and working with professional people that do this for a living the quality of the result will be much different and everyone can hear it.

How do you define success?
Success for me is when you are happy with what you have and what you are doing. Can be anything. Success is for yourself not for others.
