Hi Lanae, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I bought my first camera back in 2017. I was a student at Florida A&M University and found a new hobby that I was interested in. Come to find out, it became my passion. I was initially interested in film/ videography. So I interned with HBCU Grad, a social media platform that highlights campus life on HBCU campuses. Doing that, I had the chance to film Greek Probates (huge deal on HBCU campuses) and eventually people started to notice that I had a camera. Some of my classmates begun to ask me to take their senior grad pictures. So I slowly transitioned into photography and haven’t made a video since. Although being a photographer was never my career plan, this pandemic has kind of forced me to be an entrepreneur. So I’ve spent the last three months planning my first project and debut as a photographer. On December 12th, 2020 I will release my first Black Owned Business Calendar. This calendar will feature 12 different black-owned businesses and all the photos are taken by me. So I’m super eager to release this Calendar to showcase my work and promote other upcoming black entrepreneurs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. There has been days when I want to just be lazy and quit. There are days when I don’t think my work is good enough. Sometimes I feel like I’m selling myself short with my rates and other times, I feel like I’m not a “professional” photographer. I have literally felt every emotion. But it’s too easy to quit and I still have a long way to go.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I don’t like to put limitations on my creativity so I like to call myself a creative. Because I don’t just do one thing. I take photos, make videos, give creative direction, paint, write poetry, the list can go on and on. I’m Mogul! Lol however, people mainly know me for photography at the moment.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Pinterest and YouTube are my fav apps.
