Daily Inspiration: Meet Kawanda Lacayo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kawanda Lacayo.

Kawanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in the cultural, Jazz influenced city of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was with humble beginnings being raised in the inner city that my passion for drawing, music and food led me to creating what I called art. After the birth of our three children, my husband and I moved our family to Montgomery Alabama, and it was there that my passion evolved from self-taught pencil drawings to artistic creative works. My inherited DNA of N’awlins (New Orleans) combined with the history of Montgomery’s Civil Rights movements birth my signature technique termed “Drip and Spread”. This technique was enthusiastically rewarded with its presence in galleries, articles and many other venues for all to appreciate.

After moving to Los Angeles, California in 2014, the opportunity to re-focus my love of Art presented itself in 2018, bringing smiles to the faces of all walks of life by hosting various types of Paint Parties. These parties included: Kid’s Birthdays, Wine & Girls Night, Bachelorette and Couples Night Out and many more settings. The parties also allowed me the opportunity to share my passions with others. Most importantly, these parties resulted in everyone creating their own signature masterpiece that revealed their unknown painting ability with a lasting memorable experience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggle is having a full-time Monday through Friday job which takes me away from my passion for creativity/art. However, my full-time job is definitely needed for the livelihood of me and my family. It is a challenge for me every day I report to work because I worked in the medical field and was surrounded by sick people. I love what I do, but the pandemic has made it very difficult for me to work comfortably in my environment. After a week’s work, I relax myself by throwing myself inside my world of art and creating beauty. Since I can only work on the weekends, I’ve devoted the majority of my day thinking about how I can create a better and more pleasing experience for me and my client-base. I am aspired to making myself happy and also my client especially during these unprecedented times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My business is a mobile Paint Pour and Party. I will travel to the location my client wishes to host their parties. My job is to teach the guests how to complete their own masterpiece by using step-by-step painting skills. My objective is to bring out the creativity of each client and the award is to see the smiles on their faces when they admire their work. I’m proud to have established a business that I can enjoy with my kids and grandkids. They have accompanied and assisted me with the party arrangements. They, too, have become engaged and have enjoyed creating their masterpieces. Some of their masterpieces, I have kept as keepsakes.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
What I’ve learned during this pandemic is that we must endure and adjust to this new way of living. Everyday we have to be mindful of our safety by wearing a mask, social distancing and following the safety guidelines of our health department. During this pandemic, I have also learned that painting is very therapeutic because it brings calmness as your mind is at ease and focused on your desire to create something beautiful.
