Daily Inspiration: Meet Justin Element

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Element.

Hi Justin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The same start as many unsure college students. School. More school. Fail some classes. Take the wrong major. Go back to school. Drop out of that school. Then start my own little photography business. “Put your head down and grind in silence”. At one point, I was slaving 14 hours a day, learning how to web design, do my taxes, maneuver adobe software, keep up to date with the latest gear, market a sellable product, and all together learn how to take a picture that was aesthetically pleasing. I put my head down, enjoyed what I was doing, and never really thought of it as “work”. Instead I just “did”. And in the end – now we’re here, a very small but efficient wedding media business. We have 14 creatives on our team, do 60-80 weddings a year (pre covid), offer photo, video, and photobooth, and travel everywhere in the world. The work is immensely fulfilling and fun, and we’re challenged everyday to create.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every industry has its struggles, I’ve always focused on the relationships I have with people as the most important asset my business can have. There have been hiccups here and there but my duty has always been to my clients, I’d do anything for them. With that mentality, I’ve been able to overcome most challenges straightforwardly. Even today with the Covid world staring down on us, I’ve found a way to use my network and relationships I’ve nurtured to help me move forward in any other industry I might delve into. If I have to name something though, I’d say expanding my business and working with a team of creatives at different levels of their career can be very difficult. I have a newfound respect for human resource managers and juggling and managing different personalities and their needs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m simply a wedding photographer. I work solely from referrals. I focus on the relationships. I’m committed to composition-centric and emotionally-driven images, utilizing the environment around us to share stories. I honestly suck at shooting anything other than weddings, couples, and families. 🙂

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was 14, my brother threw a party at our house when our parents were away. One of his friends brought her little sister who was my age. He gave me the look and introduced us, handed me a beer and played me as one of the coolest high school freshman in the world. He passed away from covid this last April and almost every memory with him has become one of my favorites.
