Daily Inspiration: Meet John Mercurio

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Mercurio.

Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Here at HB Fight Club, we are a family-owned and operated non-profit mixed martial arts and fitness studio. Our classes are run by active professional athletes and our mission is to use our knowledge and expertise to help the community live a healthier and more active lifestyle. Aside from running fitness classes, our passion lies in giving back! The majority of the programs we run specialize in using non-contact boxing as a form of therapy. Our coaches are proudly certified in Rock Steady Boxing, which is a nationally recognized organization that focuses on boxing therapy for those with Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and other movement disorders. It has been so rewarding to see the impact our programs have had on our members, helping them manage their symptoms, become physically and mentally stronger, and giving them a supportive community and team environment to fight back together!

We have now expanded our therapy services to sober living and mental health facilities in the Los Angeles and Orange County area. Learning martial arts is often referred to as a discipline or a practice because it forces the individual to continue to improve and to test themselves outside of the physical aspect. Although it may seem counterintuitive, the practice of martial arts can actually help individuals lead a calmer lifestyle and can help people process their trauma and redirect feelings of powerlessness. Mastering a martial art can help someone who was previously victimized feel more in control! During our classes the clients will be held accountable to follow directions and hold each other accountable as well as themselves. We have already given many clients who struggle with anger/depression/anxiety a healthier way to redirect negative energy. Other than the immediate endorphin rush, other positive side effects include weight loss, improved muscle mass and euphoria!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our journey has not been easy, but certainly rewarding due to our members who believe in us and the work we do! Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognized many of our members were in high-risk groups with their age and underlying health conditions. As we watched gym facilities close and doctors recommending staying out of the gym, we knew we had to do something and adapt to the circumstances. As our services are a crucial therapy and truly improve our member’s quality of life, we invested in a “mobile boxing gym” where we can put stand-up boxing bags spread apart outside to accommodate our members and abide by the guidelines of the CDC. Although it was a trying time, we stayed persistent and adamant on keeping our members active in a safe and comfortable environment.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our head coach, John Mercurio, is a lifelong professional MMA fighter and boxer. He has competed in competitive organizations such as Bellator and has trained and coached top UFC fighters and athletes improve their skills before entering the ring. Our coaching style is different from the rest because we treat our therapy programs as legit boxing practices and use the same techniques and drills that any professional combat sports athlete would be prescribed. We treat our members like the fighters and true athletes they are and refer to our classes as practice and not therapy. This above all has resorted confidence in our members and has helped them regain control of any physical or mental hinderances!

What matters most to you?
We know that our mission and duty is to inspire our surrounding community members to lead a more health-conscious life. We strive to serve individuals with neurological, behavioral, or mental hindrances. Whether those afflictions are congenital or by consequence, we serve to coach and counsel these community members in developing a fighting attitude. We believe that creating a community for these individuals who have fallen victim to their impairments will help them build the confidence they hunger for; and in turn will give them the disciplines and tools they need to continue to fight back. We understand that everyone is fighting a much bigger fight. Whether you’re in the gym or in life’s arena, it is our duty to teach those in need to embrace the fighter within.
