Daily Inspiration: Meet Jennifer Mejicanos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Mejicanos.

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started in the Beauty Industry around 2016, I first started as a professional makeup artist & went to a school called E.I School of Professional Makeup. It was a one year course that taught me many, many skills, from bridal, TV & Film, Editorial & special effects makeup. It was amazing & I learned so much. I definitely fell in love with the industry. When I graduated in 2017, I ventured out to becoming a freelance makeup artist. It was very fun! I mainly did a lot of bridal & runway gigs but I always felt like I wanted to do more. So that’s when I decided I was going back to school to get my esthetician license for California. Definitely one of the best decisions I made, I felt like my knowledge expanded & was just open to a whole new world of skincare. Immediately once I completed my hours & passed state board, I applied & deepened my practice in facials.

As much as I love relaxing someone with a facial. I wanted to practice my waxing. I just always really wanted to be an esthetician that is a jack of all trades. So Around 2019, I got hired by an old employer to learn sugar waxing & just fell in love with this ancient way of removing body hair. It was just different and very effective compared to the other types of hair removal methods they are out there.

However, around 2020 when the pandemic first started & everything got shut down was when I decided to take a leap and venture out into being my own boss! Especially with being in the middle of a pandemic a lot of women were still wanting to get pampered! A client of mine even told me she & her girlfriends were texting each other numbers on women who were taking appointments for nails and hair! There wasn’t much to do during that time so I came up with my business game plan. I wanted to make a space where every woman can come in and feel comfortable to get a waxing service. The most important thing is I wanted to make it affordable. So I started making my own sugar wax for my appointments with clients. It was very hard at first to find the right consistency but after months of trial & error, I finally succeeded & got my sugar wax formula Perfect! I’m so so proud of it!

I love that it looks like as if it were honey!

From then on, I just slowly have been building my clientele.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely a struggle at the beginning especially because I was making my own batches of sugar wax for every client. As much as I watched many YouTube tutorials that explained how to make sugar wax. There was never one video that helped you make enough for just more than one person. I had to come up with my own measurements & do actual math to make sure I had a formula to follow every time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I really love that I specialize in sugar waxing. It’s a skill not a lot of esthetician know how to do. Even if you do, it takes a lot of practice to achieve that professional level where you can do a Brazilian in under 20mins. This wrist puts in work okay!! Not only that but how many esthetician’s can say they make their own sugar waxing product? I’m very proud that I make each and every single batch of sugar wax. It’s hard work but every batch is always made with love. Each batch only has three ingredients sugar, lemon, & water. Not only that but I always clean, recycle & reuse the cups I use to make sugar. They never get thrown out. As well as, I have my own lemon tree I get my lemon from & as well as compost any lemon waste.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I hope the next time you hear more about me, I will be running my own sugar waxing manufacturing company. So that way, I can make beautiful sugar wax batches for my lovely esthetician sugarista’s out there!
