Daily Inspiration: Meet Igor Sanaev

Today we’d like to introduce you to Igor Sanaev.

Hi Igor, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and grew up in very small town called Revda (Sverdlovsk region, Russia). When I was 10-12 years of age, I started showing interest in beauty and fashion. My first way of making money was doing manicures and nail design for my friend’s mom. After school, I was going from house to house while my friends where having fun. That was my way of having fun and first step into independence. Then when I was 14-15, I got a friend who was a hairdresser. He taught me basic cuts and styles and that’s where my journey begins. My first hair school was in Yekaterinburg, Russia. It was amazing. I took a few hairs and makeup classes in Moscow where I found a group of young professionals that were going to go to Vidal Sassoon Academy in London. That had always been a dream of mine so I did everything I could to join them! That Academy gave me so much more knowledge and inspiration. When I traveled to Europe, it made it clear that I did not belong in Russia… In 2012, I decided to take a chance and move to New York.

It was hard in the beginning. No English, no connections. My first job was in a small Russian salon in Manhattan. I was so sure that Manhattan was “my home”…. That I had truly found my place! That’s where I got my initial understanding of how America “works”. I built a strong foundation in New York and before I knew it, I was working in Independent movies and I had clients that performed on Broadway.

Little did I know, this was just the beginning of my journey as a Hair and Make up Artist in the States. After visiting LA for the first time in 2013, I fell in LOVE with this city! After a year of saving up, I packed my bags…left New York and headed West! After getting knocked down and refusing to give up… I am now working in the heart of Beverly Hills at The H Salon with a list of Celebrity Clients!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a very interesting road. I think the biggest challenge I had, was that I barely spoke English when I first moved to New York. I worked in an industry that relies on your relationship with your clients, so I had to be on top of my A game even more so since the communication aspect was working against me. My work had to speak for itself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I loved music, science and fashion. I was a very inquisitive kid. I always was intrigued by makeup and wanted to learn as much as I could. I never felt like I truly belonged anywhere and didn’t belong to any “social group”. I was just me, I was just Igor… I was just different from anyone else.
