Daily Inspiration: Meet Helen Oche

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Oche.

Hi Helen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a 26 old year entrepreneur and owner of Gold Halos LLC & Heavenly Hair Co. extensions. I also work as a Freelance Hairstylist here in Los Angeles. I grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland and have worked as hairstylist for the past eight years. I’ve loved doing hair for as long as I can remember, and once I realized could actually make a living from my passion, I decided I was going to take full advantage of it. However, being Nigerian, my parents really wanted me to just focus on getting a degree. I didn’t want to disappoint them, so I went to school for a bit but found myself taking clients before, after and sometimes even between classes. After a while, I decided to put 100% of my focus into my business (which had began growing a lot quicker than I expected).

For years I worked seven days a week, hustling and investing into myself and my brand, hoping to make myself and my family extremely proud one day. The first time I visited California back in 2015, I knew I had to do whatever it took to get myself established here. I really wanted to make LA my new home, I loved everything about it from the moment I got here. So I flew down here a few times, working and just trying to build a solid clientele. I went through so many ups and downs over the years, being so young I made a lot of mistakes, but I took everything as a learning experience. Looking back, I appreciate every single moment because I’ve now grown so much over the years and have been achieve one of my biggest dreams. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, I decided to take a leap of faith and make the move across the country. I didn’t expect business to take off as quickly as it did, but everything just fell into place. I’ve been blessed to meet so many amazing people since I moved here. As well as build relationships and friendships I know I’ll always cherish. So much has happened in just a year and a half, I really can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely a few ups and downs throughout the years. I started so young. and at 19 I had a hard time finding balance between working and still making time for my own personal life. I was also extremely shy & struggled with my confidence at times. I would literally get so overwhelmed with anxiety because I was such a perfectionist when it came to my craft. It took me a while to really learn how to simply just work smarter vs harder. There was a point in 2018 where I felt I had really lost everything that meant the most to me, but somehow almost two years later, things took a turn for the better. I really think as a business owner, struggling is just a part of the game. You have to go through tough times to prepare you for everything that comes with owning a business. Looking back, I honestly wouldn’t change a thing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own a Hair Extension company called Heavenly Hair. Co and I specialize in handmade Custom Wig units as well as supernatural-looking installs. I’ve spent years perfecting my craft, and I would say I’m most proud of how far I’ve come as an entrepreneur. One thing I’d say that sets me apart from others would be my patience when it comes to hair and just the time I’ve spent perfecting my technique. Looking back at how far I’ve come and the fact that I still have amazing loyal clients back home that have been with me for years that makes me super proud of myself.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
There are a few books I love, one of my favorites being “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. I read it in the beginning of 2020 and it changed my life and truly gave me the confidence to follow my dream & make the move here to California. I also love “The Subtle art of not giving a F***” by Mark Manson. That book changed my perspective on so many things and really helped me to understand things aren’t always going to my way, things just happen, good and bad. So instead of obsessing over what I can’t control, it’s more beneficial to focus on what I do have control over, which is myself. “As a Man Thinketh” was another game changer I feel like everyone should read at some point in their lives. That book really helped me understand that I have a so much control over my reality, which i’m constantly creating with my own thoughts. I love to go back and read a few pages every now and then when I feel like I’ve fallen off track. Definitely a great book to help center yourself.
