Today we’d like to introduce you to Halston Shannon.
Halston, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since my youth, I’ve always known I had a pretty sharp creative eye. While it wasn’t until my college years that I decided to use my talents in the graphic design/branding realm, I always knew who I was and what my purpose was in this world. There were even points in time in which I wanted to be an architect and an engineer before discovering my love for the digital arts in high school. While attending Florida Atlantic University, I discovered that I could really accomplish something special with my talents. I actually did not major in graphic design while in undergrad, as a result of following my mother’s guidance to instead pursue a business degree. The knowledge I gained from my degree would complement my creative skills and allow me to fully pursue graphic design as an entrepreneurial endeavor.
On campus, I was heavily involved in multiple organizations, all of which I served as the Marketing Chair/Director for. These were my earliest opportunities at developing my craft, as I would always create the marketing materials for our upcoming events to promote on social media. My efforts in my organizations eventually began to catch the eye of my fellow peers on campus. Whether it was another organization that needed my assistance or an aspiring business owner on campus that was interested in a logo design, I began to experience a taste of what entrepreneurship as a creative would look like. I started out doing all free work, as I was only really interested in building up my skills and portfolio. Eventually, the requests began to really pile up and at that point is when I decided to monetize my work and the rest is history. Seven years later, I have exceeded even my own expectations. I have had the opportunity to work with politicians, universities, city governments and have even designed a specialty state license plate. I can confidently say I am now one of the best at what I do and will always continue to be a student of the game.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. In this field, you have to really possess patience and persistence. The bookings may not always be rolling in consistently at first, there will always be those “annoying” clients, and with there being so many graphic designers out there it can take years to carve out a style that is unique and can’t be found anywhere else. I receive compliments about my work all the time, and it is much appreciated. However, those same people that admire my work should also be made aware of all of the research that I have had to partake in to perfect my craft, that I have run into many dead ends, and that I developed enough mental fortitude in the beginning to not compare myself to other designers who were already flourishing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Digital & Print Design, Logo Design, and Web Design. In my opinion, my talent truly shines in my logo design work and I believe anyone that has seen my work would agree. While I do high-quality work in general, my creativity and ability to wow people with my ideas is at its peak when creating logos that truly capture the essence of a brand. What sets me apart, to keep it short, is that my work makes you stand out. Like most designers, I am dedicated to giving you what you want but I am also dedicated to going above and beyond your expectations. Clients book me because I have a unique style and have a gift for design that cannot be taught.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, to me, is very simple to define. Once you’ve identified what your purpose on Earth is, success immediately then becomes defined by how much you are able to fulfill that purpose. How well you are able to maximize the skills and abilities that God gifted you with to benefit others is the ultimate measure of success.
