Daily Inspiration: Meet Essence Barnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Essence Barnes.

Hi Essence, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was younger, I lost my dad to suicide. It’s an act that has plagued my family for generations as it is the same way that my dad lost both of his parents. I remember being as young as 13 and struggling with my own mental health but not having the proper knowledge or awareness to advocate for myself. As deeply rooted as mental health should have been in my family, it was still somehow a taboo subject. I knew that I wanted to change that and made it my mission to start breaking generational curses. I made it my mission to become a mental health advocate and picked up a bachelor’s degree in psychology along the way. I later took a special interest in fatherless women and how that affects our mental health as well as how we show up in the world and in relationships, and from there my brand “Daddy Issues” was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely been a bumpy one. In fact, I still hit bumps from time to time. The biggest part of my journey has been facing my own demons, many of which I didn’t even know were there. However, I can honestly say it’s been the most rewarding part without question.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The thing that sets me apart from others would simply be my willingness to put myself & all my personal business out there for the comfort and growth of others. We live in a social media driven world where many people are concerned with creating a perfect image and my main objective was to dismantle mine. My favorite part of the project so far has been the release of my podcast titled “Daddy issues and dirty laundry” which you can find on all major platforms. I wanted to create a safe space for transparency on the everyday issues that many of us face but never discuss. It’s here where I am the most vulnerable & show up in my rawest form, as do my guest. I’m blessed to share this platform with one of my cousins, Patriciá Roberts (aka Trish) who has shared similar life experiences and has officially taken on the role as my co-host. We have great chemistry on air & both of us are rather multifaceted, so not only are you guaranteed to gain some insight and relate in some way, but you’re also going to laugh. Aside from the podcast, I also offer advocacy, mentorship, life coaching, support groups, public speaking appearances and an accompanying clothing line.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think life is all about taking risks, especially when it comes to chasing your dreams and reaching your highest potential. No real growth comes from comfort zones and you have to be willing to lose something in order to ultimately gain what you really desire.
