Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Zamora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Zamora.

Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As far as taking pictures goes, I’ve owned a camera since I was really young (probably around middle school!). Whether they were disposable, point and shoot, or underwater cameras, I would take pictures of anything and everything. Like I literally took pictures of food and shoes before it was cool, haha. My hobby eventually grew into something a little more serious when I started being asked to photograph family photos and friends’ college graduation portraits. By this time, I had upgraded to my first DSLR but NEVER thought I’d actually make any real profit off of what I was photographing. Fast forward a couple of years, a marriage, a move home to Los Angeles, and a full-time job at a start-up company later and I was continuing to take on sessions part-time and starting to charge for them. I specifically remember going on a hike one day with my husband and talking about if I’d ever take my little part-time dream and make it a full-time reality. It was during this talk that the name Simply Wandering Photo was born! Keeping my posing and editing style natural but also exploring new and exciting locations to take photos at. It was a year and a half ago when I moved from Los Angeles to Portland, OR that I made it official and went full time. Since then, I’ve been “dual based” and serve clients in both locations. I feel TRULY blessed to get the photograph in the best of both worlds- the breathtaking beauty of the PNW and the sunshine and endless beaches of SoCal.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been without its struggles and hiccups, but I feel fortunate for the opportunities and relationships that have helped me along the way. I feel like I struggled with things that every entrepreneur struggles with like starting a business and all of the legal stuff that comes with that, knowing how much to charge and how to start making profit, and even knowing when is the “right time” to leave a steady job and go full-time (hint hint, you probably won’t ever feel like it’s the right time).

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle and wedding photographer mainly, but I also photograph families and individuals! I would say my style is natural and candid and I like to keep my editing style pretty neutral and true to life. I feel like everyone says this, but I love being able to convey a feeling or bring up a memory with my photography so if anything, I’d say that’s what I hope sets me apart!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Well, first and foremost, the friends that I’ve made in the industry have kept me sane and positive. They also inspire me and challenge me to constantly grow and evolve. As far as podcasts go, a few of my favorites are the Heart and Hustle Podcast, Wedding Salt Podcast by Casi Yost, and the Office Ladies Podcast (for some comedic relief). I’m always checking out the free photographer resource blogs produced by Casi Yost Photography as well!
