Daily Inspiration: Meet Embracing Oceans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Embracing Oceans. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Embracing Oceans was started as a result of a musical connection that was undeniable. The duo is comprised of Brazilian guitarist and producer Edi Roque and American oboist and vocalist Skye Butterfield. We discovered our compatibility while performing with a local band and began writing spec work for TV and film. After our first writing session together, we knew we had found our partner, both professionally and in life, and things really started taking off in a million different directions. We found ourselves writing and recording for licensing libraries, scoring for film/TV, and working on our debut album, Dear Dawn. While we each have parts of our career that move separately from each other, the projects we have working together are by far the most dynamic and expressive collaborations. Our duo extends beyond being a band and is an all around partnership in music, business, and love.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with working in any art field, it is an upward battle getting your bearings in the industry. The fact that our backgrounds are so different allowed us an open mind while discovering what avenues we ideally wanted to pursue. We have worked on many different projects, some that we decided were not the right direction for us and others that have led to where we are today. “Struggles” isn’t the word we would use to describe the bumps in our path but rather obstacles that we have had to maneuver and of course, life is the most disruptive obstacle when building a career.

Is there anything in your career that you particularly proud of?
We do not view ourselves through the restrictive lens of being a band; because yes we do perform together and yes we do have an album of our music, but we do so much more within the music industry and establishing our voice as a composing duo provides us endless opportunities without boundaries. We are both well-versed in a wide variety of instruments and truly enjoy incorporating new instruments into our repertoire and compositions. This has drawn the attention of some wonderful directors and encouraged them to consider sound and music when working a film. Being a driving force behind a director’s outlook by bringing the awareness music can impact a film has been an extremely rewarding experience and feels like we have made a footprint in the industry thus far. As we become more established, we are determined to use our platform to evoke change and have had a wonderful experience partnering with Extraordinary Families, a local non-profit that works to secure safe and stable permanency for youth in foster care; doing our best to amplify the work they do throughout the community. Writing and creating music feed our souls but we ultimately love doing it with the higher intention to give back and better our community.
