Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorit Thies.
Hi Dorit, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in the northern part of Germany as an only child. My father still actively working at 89 years old, has his own carpentry business and my mother was an epic gardener, cook, and housewife. After working as a nurse until my early twenties, I moved to the city of Hamburg and I fell for the art of makeup artistry. Having worked for several years in Europe for magazines, music videos, and commercials, I had the chance to immigrate to the US in the late ’80s and Los Angeles became my new home. I have always been inspired by photography and decided to learn how to shoot in my early ’30s, shortly after moving to LA. I assisted other photographers for a few years while supporting myself doing hair and makeup on photoshoots. My focus was on the art of black and white photography and I was lucky when Men’s Health Germany became my first solid client. Shooting covers for seven years in Los Angeles, I established a name in the fitness and health industry and I then developed into the specialty of beauty photography, which came naturally and within the next few years many beauty brands became my clients. I have always enjoyed shooting personal work and I became obsessed with photographing floral still lifes in my living room turned studio while experimenting with different lighting techniques and cultivating my skill set. When visiting Germany in 2019, I made a personal commitment to take care of my mom after she was diagnosed with cancer. During the difficult time when I was caring for my mother, I received an invitation for a solo exhibit at the Gallery “Space Place” in Nizhniy Tagil, the Ural in Russia, asking me to show a series of 25 flora images. After sharing the news with my mother, she encouraged and blessed me to take on this project. I personally traveled to Russia in January of 2020 to attend the opening and had a wonderful time with my gracious host and gallerist. When I returned to the US, the Pandemic started and we all know what came next.
During the pandemic, I was invited to collaborate with AMAZING MAGAZINE, a Los Angeles-based fashion and celebrity publication. My team and I were able to shoot a few fashion, beauty, and celebrity stories, all outdoors in a safe environment. I loved the challenge and shooting fashion has become my new obsession.
The pandemic slowed down my life tremendously and my pets (1 dog and 1 cat) became very close and helped me get through times of loneliness and anxiety. Developing new concepts and shooting ideas, and based on my own experience I wanted to photograph people with their pets in a formal portrait setting. I collaborated with a stylist who styled the models in high-end vintage clothing, a perfect sustainable concept. In addition, I photographed beauty images of the models with no make-up, simply promoting organic and natural skin, free of chemicals, using only vegan and cruelty-free products. I believe that we all take responsibility and have to do our part to protect the planet, the animals, and therefore ourselves, as much as we can. It has become my latest post-pandemic self-promotional campaign.
My very latest project was a cover and fashion layout shoot for ELLE Bulgaria, photographing the fashion icon Maye Musk, who also just published her latest book, “A woman makes a plan”. Her book has already become a bestseller in many countries.
This cover story will be published in the June issue of 2021.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a woman in the professional photography industry where the higher percentage of photographers are men, can be challenging but it can also be an incredible advantage. Women have different interests, viewpoints, esthetics and they have different emotions. Staying ahead and always learning new skills makes you very compatible. I always try to work with the most highly skilled crew, assuring a successful product.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an “image creator”. I enjoy elevating people and brands with my photography, my talent and my skill set. I am extremely experienced, an excellent listener, organized, detail oriented and I have everything at my fingertips to create a successful product.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Growing up in a small village in northern Germany, I learned early on to appreciate kindness and to follow your dream, no matter where you are from. My parents taught me a deep connection to nature.
