Daily Inspiration: Meet Daria Matiunina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daria Matiunina.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a professional makeup artist. I started my career by accident. Let me start by saying that my friend is a photographer. She divorced her husband and asked me to stay at my house for a while because she had nowhere to go…. And to support her, I began to go with her to the shooting for the company. And one day she said that she couldn’t find a good makeup artist and added that it would be great if I learned and we would start working together because we have a lot of fun together.

I went to school. And three months later I started working on the set. Step by step. There were publications in magazines, large projects began to come, collaborations with brands known all over the world, fashion shows, private orders, television, and so on. Everyone really liked my individual style of work and high quality of performance. Therefore, in a fairly short period of time, I made a major leap in my career. It was in Moscow. And then I decided that I wanted to shoot in Los Angeles. I came to America specifically for this, gathered a team, and we published our shooting in a magazine.

In 2019, I fell in love with Los Angeles. And I decided that I should find a way to legally move to live here. And then I began to work on documents for the most difficult O1 visa. I had been working on documents for two years. There was a pandemic. All embassies were closed. I had to fly to Warsaw for an interview. And I did it. In March 2022, I moved to my lovely Los Angeles. And by this point, I had already received work in a short film, a documentary film, private shootings, worked with a Levi’s designer, participated in the filming of a music video, etc.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
First of all, the fear of spoiling the result of the entire team. In addition, no one ever in school tells how to look for a job for a new makeup artist. I worked for free for a very long time. Looking for professional contacts. I left my contact wherever possible. And all this happens against the backdrop of self-doubt, when you still do not have enough experience, you still do not understand how to do high-quality makeup. Sometimes I said “yes I can do it” but in fact, I had no idea how it was possible. And then I watched YouTube, at night I put products on top of each other in layers to get the result. In addition, I had the main job. I didn’t have a day off. Because a make-up case costs a lot of money and I could not leave work to do only make-up. Then my profession as a makeup artist did not bring enough income. I am happy that I had the strength, patience, and diligence to wait for the moment when I get on my feet.

I have a global dream to make it easier for new makeup artists to find jobs. And I know how to do it. I just need time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional makeup artist. My career has grown very quickly. I got a visa for talented people and moved to live in Los Angeles. I have been published in magazines over 50 times including VOGUE, GLAMOR, Estetica. My make-up style is exceptionally delicate and expressive at the same time. I very skillfully select natural colors to create an image, emphasizing the natural beauty. I preserve the beautiful texture of the skin, which is very much the price of the top professional photographers. I know exactly what makeup technique to choose when working on photos, videos, TV. And I always take into account the future light on the set. For this, I am appreciated in the industry. My makeup will never look unnatural and separate from the model.
