Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Hall.
Danny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Idea —> Vision —> Reality
Idea: Dr. Hall recognized in dental school that, while in the pediatric clinic, he was seeing child after child who not only received dental treatment, but bounced out of the chair with an increased “pep in their step.” Watching kids succeed was uniquely fulfilling for him.
Vision: After dental school, Dr. Hall built a highly varied clinical foundation, providing care for numerous pediatric populations in different settings. A consistent theme emerged as Dr. Hall consistently cultivated confidence within children. Excitement grew as the plan to build a practice of his own developed.
Reality: Sunray Pediatric Dentistry in Torrey Highlands of San Diego now stands as “the place” where children can overcome obstacles, successfully accomplish treatment, and cultivate confidence. The team is like-minded in their mission to be a ray of light in the community, spark enthusiasm for oral health, and facilitate success for kids.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In Apr/May of 2020 (a few months after the start of the pandemic), I considered the choice to continue the startup process or hit pause, just as I was solidifying the space/lease for the practice. I decided that COVID would not render oral health unimportant; it would remain important, and the community would still seek dental care for their children. Not knowing how things would play out, I chose to move forward. So, we locked in the lease. After that, unfortunately, the build-out was slowed, even halted for 5 months, while the city of San Diego ever-so-slowly approved the permits. Financial obligations related to a build-out marched on, but we weathered that period and are still weathering times now while we’ve been open about 3 months now and are meeting more and more wonderful families in the San Diego community.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
How is Sunray different from other pediatric dental offices? **
We are “the place” where children can overcome obstacles, successfully accomplish treatment, and CULTIVATE CONFIDENCE. My goal is to help kids succeed with us, and build their confidence, then watch them walk out the door with increased confidence. This has a ripple effect in their lives. If a child, especially one who began their appointment feeling nervous, can overcome that, or anxiety, or a negative past experience, or just a fear of the unknown or lack of control (very normal at the dentist; the mouth is a vulnerable part of the body), then a child will be able to do ANYTHING after that. And I get to facilitate this everyday, and my team is good at it. When cultivating confidence is the goal, the dentistry “happens” or “gets done,” but more than that kids continue their lives with increased confidence.
I have so much fulfillment when facilitating kids’ success and instilling confidence.
. . .
My dental team at Sunray see infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents ages 0-18. We welcome kids with mild to severe anxiety, kids with negative past dental/ medical experiences, and kids needing atypical accommodations. Each child is unique as to what will help them successfully accomplish treatment. Kids can choose from a menu of aids to help build confidence during appointments (i.e. a blanket, a stuffed animal friend, fidget toys, etc.). We are dedicated to facilitating success for kids. Sometimes this relates to time, patience, number of appointments, thinking outside the box, adapting on-the-fly, and connecting with kids in unexpected ways.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” -A quote by Elbert Hubbard Often the biggest challenge in life is just getting started, or showing up.
So, take that first step… identify that goal, or submit that application, or make that appointment that you need. Take that first step that commits you to change and elevates your life.
