Daily Inspiration: Meet Chris Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Johnson.

Hi Chris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a real estate agent in Southern California for nearly 15 years. My partner and fiance has been an agent for 25 years. We met over four years ago when we were agents with KW in Calabasas, ended up working together due to our complementary talents and difficulty in competing while living together. Since we began, we have grown our business nearly 3x.

We coach with Tom Ferry and due to his suggesting, video content was the next marketing step, Holly had a dream of building a real estate video channel. Having never acted or been in front of a camera, I was shy and reluctant.

Holly had already been doing a ton of social media with quick market updates from her car and around town, but during the very beginning of the pandemic we started a little show called Holly & Chris Tell it Like it is, where we discussed real estate topics, like selling during the winter or how to handle multiple offers. This led to property walk-throughs, however, after one or two, we didn’t want to continue to be like other agents who show you where the kitchen is and what cool appliances it has.

Living up to one of our tag lines, “We buck real estate cliche,” we stepped out of line adding a bit of comedy and style to our videos. The very first moment was when Holly was doing the cliche sexy car down a long driveway scene and I stopped the car and stated, “Stop this cliche car thing, let’s get to the house.” It was a hit!

We have continued creating videos about listings with scripts written mostly by our children. We created stories that people would want to see, like a science fiction portal at the door of the home that transforms us to elegance, while my truck morphs into an Aston Martin DB11, an Italian adventure in a $20M Calabasas listing, a Scooby Do, Halloween style final walkthrough after the sale, and one where we actually sold the house to dogs.

Given we were filming some great stories, we decided to renovate our home on camera, creating Flippin’ it with Holly & Chris, in which we demo, clean up, and renovate our own home from inside out. We got a lot of attention and it looks as if it is leading to our own show!

We started a real estate team this year, adding several agents in January. This challenge has truly stepped us in the right direction for success with better organization and direction.

2022 has been a whirlwind of amazing opportunities, including our own TV show and partnering in a successful real estate agency with the goals of opening 10+ locations in California alone.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Working 24/7 together as a couple, especially during the pandemic, has been a challenge and a blessing. Most partnerships, little less relationships are heavily strained if not destroyed during times like this. We have come through the end more in love and can’t wait to finally get married.

Building our own team is a huge challenge. Not only do we have to be successful agents, but spend our time coaching several others to a level where we feel comfortable releasing them to the world with our names on their business cards.

There are many more challenges to come. Our year is going to be packed with incredible things and we look forward to every moment.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We already spoke about our filming. We decided a long time ago to buck real estate cliche by doing films just a bit different than the other agents. Our films have built a character that goes far in every deal, with agents talking about it as we enter the home, and buyers and sellers sharing the films with their friends going a long way for marketing. We truly enjoy getting in front of the camera and showing people who we are. We are proud of our productions! And there are so many more to come.

Many times as we walk into a listing, our films precede us. Our conversations veer from the business of real estate and discounting commissions to “will you make a video like that for us?” Creativity is key in today’s real estate and doing the same as last year will get you less because many more are stepping up and creating some great video content.

Lastly, in a world where Holly and I have been told we are too nice to be successful, we decided to stay humble, be kind, be the best we can be, treat our clients and agents alike with complete respect. This has bode well with many referrals and a ‘tribe’ of friends and clients that fulfill our lives. We want only to do it right and take care of our friends, family, and future, and it is working out quite well.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Our why is our family. Holly and I have 5 kids between us, 18-23, and we are focused on making them the happiest and most well-round humans they can be. We want them to have all the opportunities in the world to be exactly who they want to be while spending as much valuable time with them as possible. Real estate and working together is not only a financial means to that but a personal business in which we make our own schedule so we are always available to share our love with family.
