Daily Inspiration: Meet Cheryl Honig

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Honig.

Hi Cheryl, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been baking for my friends and family since I was an adult and had my own kitchen. I enjoy baking all types of goodies, especially challah. I knew that my challah was better than anything you could buy in a store, so I decided to start a challah baking business. I obtained a Cottage Food Business Class A permit from the Orange County Health Department and spread the word that I now sell and deliver challah. I started to receive orders, and my customers really liked my challah and the convenience of delivery. After 1 1/2 years, I decided to seriously consider opening up a brick-and-mortar bakery providing all the things I enjoyed baking the most: Belgian Street Waffles, Honey Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Pecan Drops, Butterscotch Haystacks, Challah and much more. After much thought, planning, projections, and assistance from my consultant from the Small Business Development Center, I opened The Blessed Braid – the only kosher-certified retail bakery in Orange County. All the baked goods are non-dairy and made on the premises from wholesome ingredients. The customers enjoy shopping in a beautiful environment and the convenience of buying freshly baked kosher products close to home.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggle I encountered was making the decision to move forward to create the bakery. I knew that once I made the decision to go forward, I would be able to learn all I needed and would find people who had experience and who were willing to answer my questions. The hard part was convincing myself to take the leap and just do it. So I wrote a list of my skills and talents and realized that anything I was lacking I could find in people along the way. Once I made the decision, it was smooth sailing because I had excellent professionals to guide me. I told them my vision, and they told me how to achieve it. I listened to what they said and my vision came to life day by day! There was one day in August 2021 when I was told the ovens wouldn’t arrive until January and the bakery was scheduled to open in December. That was a little stressful, but it all worked out!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have worked at many interesting things in my life. I was a Medical Sales Executive in London, England. I managed a chess business in Anaheim Hills, CA. I worked as a campaign coordinator for a local city council member and worked as his Senior Executive Assistant at City Hall in Irvine, CA. I sold window coverings all over Southern California, and now I am an owner of a bakery. I specialize in being kind to people and treating them with respect. My bakery is known for being the only kosher-certified retail bakery in Orange County. That’s pretty special to me! My bakery is making it easier for people to carry out their religious beliefs. I am now, have been for 27 years, and will always continue to be most proud of the wonderful relationship I have with my daughter. We choose to spend time together and we laugh a lot! I count my moments with her as my most precious! I like to think that what sets me apart from others is that I do what I say I will do. If you ask my friends and family, they may say something different!! Ha Ha!

What does success mean to you?
Success, in general, is being helpful to people and enabling everyone you have a conversation with to walk away from the conversation feeling good about themselves. In a business sense, I define success as hearing rave reviews from my customers about the look of the bakery, the service they encounter, and the taste of the products they buy. Compliments about the bakery and repeat business are certainly little successes I celebrate along the way, but for me, the ultimate success will come when the sales in my bakery pay the bills. Then I will feel like “we’ve made it”!!
