Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Mackey.
Candace, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was about nine years old, my mom caught me in the closet of our apartment at the time singing Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down.” My mother yelled in shock that I could sing and from there, it became a passion of mine. I attended Frank Sinatra School of Arts where my passion for being a superstar grew. One day while my mother was playing the rapper The Game’s album, I googled his label and decided to take things into my own hands. I called his management team at the time and spoke to someone about getting an internship there. I knew I needed to start somewhere to learn about the music industry, and what better way than to start as an intern. After gaining experience and knowledge of the industry, I was introduced to people who helped to advance my budding singing career. Fast forward years later to now, I’m blessed to have a community of creatives in my corner including my long-time producer CJ The Great.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth journey. I’ve lost many relationships with people over the years and have even struggled with depression. Thankfully, I have music as my outlet.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a R&B singer and songwriter who uses music to share my personal life stories while motivating women to recognize the true queens they are. My sound is a bit different from today’s music. It’s a mix of the 90s and 2000s with a twist of an up-to-date sound. I’m truly proud of the music I’ve released over the years and can’t wait to release my newest project this year which features my latest singles “Day and Night” featuring IVL and “Options” featuring Shokanni. In addition to doing music, I just launched my own lip product line, CandySmacks, which features lip glosses in different shades from glitter shimmers to everyday tones
What makes you happy?
Being around people I love and around positive energy. I am very protective of my energy and who I allow in my space, especially since I worked so hard to be here. Of course, listening to good music, especially jazz or some good R&B, makes me happy as well.
