Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigitte Tolson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I started Green Chemistry, I had been a Medical Esthetician for over 15 years, and I was continually making custom blends of serums with steam distilled oils and herbs for my skincare clients because I was disappointed with the quality of the mass-manufactured products in the “clean” luxury skincare world. I grew up with an English father who would garden quite a bit, and I had been making natural formulas (sometimes to his annoyance!) for years when I was young, but now I had the opportunity to collaborate with Ayurvedic doctors and cosmetic chemists and make results-oriented formulas that use high-quality botanicals. We managed to get the attention of Vogue magazine last year, and three of our formulas were showcased, along with our contributions to bee conservation. Bees have always been my favorite animal, and without them we would not be able to survive, so we donate 3$ for each online sale to the Los Angeles Beekeepers Association.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have been many challenges and lessons along the way, but that makes the triumphs even more exciting! We were set to launch in 2020, but because we source our ingredients from small farms across various parts of the USA, production had been severely delayed. We had quickly sold out of our formulas after the blessing of some positive attention from various magazines and beauty experts, and that meant we had an eight months delay on restocking half of our products. I will never complain about that hurdle though because I feel fortunate to personally be healthy and be in business after the effects of the pandemic have devastated so many lives and businesses.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I truly care about each formula I create because I still see my skincare clients one on one for treatments, some of which I’ve known for over 20 years, and I am held accountable for the ongoing results they see. Beyond being a Medical Esthetician, I am also a surgical technician and herbalist, so I understand and believe in the use of clinical ingredients like retinol and AHAs and the healing properties of herbs rooted in ancient medicine like tulsi and ashwagandha. I also believe that I am always capable of learning more, so I collaborate to create each formula with a team of chemists and doctors that have valuable insight and knowledge beyond my own. Though I am truly proud of each formulation we have spent years perfecting, I am mostly proud of our involvement in bee conservation. My goal as we grow is to eventually be involved in beekeeping on a larger scale and devote some acreage to apiculture.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If you never take any risks, you never stand to create anything innovative. Though devoting time and resources to the venture of Green Chemistry required the risk of my own time and resources, it was absolutely worth it. Every new move you make requires risk, but you learn to accept that and consider it part of the voyage.
