Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Cantu.
Brianna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Palmdale, California. I always wanted to be a teacher up until I was around 21. I started a retail job and liked that more than working with kids so I knew something had to change. I moved to Australia for a year as an Au Pair (live in Nanny) because I just wanted something different and it was honestly the best thing I could have done.
As cliche as it is, I slowly found myself, my passions, what I wanted and didn’t want in life. I then started volunteering at a floral shop. A florist named Katie took me under her wing and showed me the ropes. I moved back home starting my own business in floristry! I knew this is what I wanted to do, I have always been creative but I never had the confidence to use or show it. Floristry isn’t my only job though, I am a flight attendant. Being a flight attendant has been such a thrilling journey. I get to see the world and it leaves my schedule flexible to be able to still do weddings and events. I get the best of both worlds!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! I started knowing no one in the wedding industry. I started in Australia not home. I reached out to a flower shop when I came back home to try and get advice or volunteer to see if they had classes. She told me to think of another career because it’s not easy and I won’t succeed unless I have a husband who is the bread maker. That advice only made me try harder! I kept going until I found people who gave me a chance and supported me.
There are times when insecurities play a part in floristry or even just creativity. People are trusting me with their special day and as much as I can love a piece I arrange, I get so nervous to see the bride’s reaction or whoever is ordering will be. What if they don’t like it? What if I got the vision wrong? What if the flowers die? I went into floristry knowing nothing about flowers, heck I still am learning! Nothing comes easy in life, we have to work for it, and if we don’t take risks, we will never know how far we can go.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come. I wouldn’t be where I am without the choices I’ve made, the obstacles I’ve faced, and the people who were by my side while facing them. I’m proud at the risks I’ve taken in life whether they lead to a positive outcome or negative. I’ve learned from all of them. I think what sets me apart from others is I will do what I feel called to do. If I have something I want, I will go for it. I don’t know what I’m known for, maybe the “florist flight attendant.” What I want to be known for is being a kind, creative, and outgoing person. A person who works hard and is living the best life possible no matter what while inspiring others to do the same.
