Daily Inspiration: Meet Anthony Marable

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Marable.

Hi Anthony, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Art has been a part of my life since I can remember. Beginning in the first grade, my best friend and I began taking classes at Barnsdall Art Park on Hollywood Blvd. From painting to ceramics to drawing, I was exposed to a variety of mediums at a young age, and as I grew up I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. I earned three associate’s degrees after attending Pasadena City College for three years, and am currently attending my last year of college at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I will earn my bachelor’s degree for art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the biggest struggle for me that still continues today is knowing my worth as an artist. With my work, I feel that there is always something to be improved on, so it can be hard sometimes to accept compliments/words of enthusiasm from mentors, friends, clients, etc. Being 22 years of age, I feel that there is still an infinite amount of knowledge for me to obtain and apply to my work. I view this struggle of personal value as a double-edged sword. While it can be frustrating at times understanding the value of what I create, it pushes me to continue improving on my craft so that slowly I am able to gain more and more confidence in myself and what I can achieve artistically.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mainly specialize in creating portraits. My most recent series focuses on popular musical artists that bring me joy and inspiration through their songs. Wanting to learn more about these individuals, I will listen to their entire discographies, watch documentaries, and listen to interviews to get a better sense of who these people are and what they want to convey in their music. Recent commissions have steered me in other directions of work, such as tattoo design, product design, and customizing sneakers. With these commissions, I am able to expand my versatility and experiment with mediums I don’t typically work with.

What makes you happy?
I would say that my friends are what make me happy. I am fortunate enough to have people in my life that support me in any and all aspects of my life. When it comes to my art, they help me the most in putting my work out into the world and understanding its value, especially since I struggle a lot with that.
