Daily Inspiration: Meet Amy Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Huang.

Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started with photos of me and my twin sister. My father was a photographer. He captured some of the most beautiful photos of me and my twin sister. And these are the only memories I have with her. She died at nine months and I always felt like part of me was missing. I didn’t realize how much photos meant to me until I realized I still had pieces of her – evidence of her life and her smiles!

This is the power of photos and photography. The ability to freeze memories in time – and even memories of a person. And that’s where it all began.

And since then, I’ve always had a camera – I grew up with one in my hands. But, it wasn’t until I became a parent that I learned to love photography. Before, like all kids growing up with a photographer, I actually hated the camera!

Fast forward some odd years, my husband and I opened our photography company in 2009 – Ax2D Photography. We landed weddings right away and worked till about 2013. Fast forward 7 more years – plus 3 kids – in 2020, I took charge of the company, rebranded and made it my own – Amy Huang Photography. I wanted people to know who they will be working with from the start.

With a lot of photography education, building relationships with other vendors and photographers, my photography has transformed so much! And I owe it all to the community I’ve surrounded myself with that are always there to encourage me and push me in the right directions! Businesses don’t just grow right away, it takes time and commitment – and a lot of heart!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Life is all about ups and downs. If you don’t struggle, you don’t grow. Some of my major struggles stemmed out of the realization that I had to take this business into my own hands. I needed to be fully self-sufficient and capable on my own. I also had to love what I was doing and creating things I loved.

After I realized this, I took to the bottomless photography education that made a huge boom in the past five years! It gave anyone the tools and ability to be a photographer. But… I still have to say that some people are gifted with a natural eye for it. And, with the amount of work to run a business, not everyone will succeed.

And that is life! All we can do is keep struggling, keep growing, keep learning and just push forward! Those who don’t fail, will eventually see the fruits of all their labor and hard work!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in film-inspired wedding and portrait photography. My work – using the RefinedCo’s KT Merry preset – has a dreamy softness to them. You would mostly get this feel from film and more fine-art photography.

My goal, for all my clients, is to create soft, warm, elegant, romantic heartfelt photos. Photos that speak of the beauty of life, the greatest joys, so much fun, and most importantly the sweetness of love!

And from the time of growth I had – these past 3 years – I’ve found a deep love for details – flowers, dress, people – and the desire to document them in a way that serves everyone.

In terms of what sets me apart, although this is hard question to answer, people have said my superpowers are my ability to pay attention to details. I’m able to photograph details in such a way to make them look elegant and refined. People also say I have an uncanny ability to create connections, build groups and put people at ease. I’m approachable and people naturally want to gravitate toward me or my smile.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is being happy but yet humble with your achievements. I believe, as human beings, we aren’t made to live life by ourselves. We are made to share our lives and our wisdom with others. We are meant to grow, mold and sharpen each other to be better versions of ourselves.

But the main key to this all is finding and being surrounded by the right community and people – people who will lift you up time and time again.
