Daily Inspiration: Meet Alexis Keegan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Keegan.

Alexis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My earliest memory is me wanting to be a singer, but I was such a shy kid. I would lock myself in my room and as cliché as it sounds, sing into a hairbrush in the mirror – mostly Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Something about those two just awakened something in my soul. The hiding and daydreaming lasted until I was 12 years old – when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I turned to music even more as an escape from the reality of what was going on. To this day I think it was the only thing that got me through. One song that was on repeat during that time was Mariah Carey’s “Butterfly”. During the end when things got really bad for my dad, I sang that song into a little voice recorder and it was played for him. He had a reaction to the recording and it was from that day forward that I made a promise to myself that I would use music as a way to help people the way it helped me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If by smooth road you mean has sinkholes and is also raining so bad you can’t see out the windshield…then yes very smooth road haha. In all seriousness, a lot of pursuing music feels like you are running on a hamster wheel. You are working so hard to go forward but you’re standing still. You hear “no” way more than you hear “yes” and it can be really taxing on a person. But once you get that music bug it never ever goes away, so you have to keep pushing through.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Resilience – the amount of times I got turned down and told “no” is just beyond but you have to let it roll off of your shoulders and keep going. You have to immediately move onto the next thing or you will get stuck in the rejection and never be able to escape it. I remind myself that I do this for my love of music/singing and that’s all that matters in the end.
