Conversations with Yana Petrova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yana Petrova.

Hi Yana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been interested in photography since a very early age, dabbling in film cameras as a child. Growing up, I always found a way to learn more about the art of photography. I began experimenting with a light, playing around in Photoshop or sometimes film short videos with my friends. I was 17 when my family immigrated to Los Angeles, СA. As a teenager living in the Center of Film Industry, I was very curious how movies were made and I registered with Central Casting where I was chosen to be an extra in one of the Netflix’s shows “Atypical”. It was my first time being on the film set, I was very fascinated about the filmmaking process so I decided to change my major and eventually graduated with six degrees in Film and TV Production. After graduating from college, I got an opportunity to intern at Global Cinematography Institute where I learned more in depth about the art and craft of cinematography and discovered a love for visual storytelling. From there, my journey of filmmaking began.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, of course not! Every day is a new challenge, but I learned a lot from those challenges and appreciate what I have gone through. I do believe that rough times and trials that come our way are necessary and define who we are today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a cinematographer and freelance photographer. I never stop learning and sometimes I would fill positions as production assistant, gaffer, Key Grip, camera operator or 1st AC. I am passionate about what I do and do it from the bottom of my heart which I believe is very important.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always looking for creative, talented people to collaborate with. The best way to contact me is through my email and social networks, you can also support me by following and sharing my work.
