Conversations with Victoria Saint

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Saint.

Hi Victoria, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I discovered my voice, and with me singing came before speaking. Soon after, I began taking piano lessons, where my passion for music continued to blossom. With music being the forefront of my family’s culture, I was exposed to many genres throughout my upbringing. From jazz to rock and g-funk to soul & pop, I was fascinated by it all! As a self-taught singer, I looked to my inspirations as resources and learned by listening. Growing up, I’d spend countless hours playing records on repeat, always finding a way to renew a classic by coming up with counter melodies and arrangements. Those techniques being what shaped my vocal and music style as well as evolving my writing capabilities, laying the foundation of my artistry today.

Flash forward to how I got to where I am:

It was early 2020, the beginning of the pandemic. Like many, I was at home, staying safe and writing music. Meanwhile, I took to social media and found that a lot of music creatives, executives, and artists were looking for entertainment and talent. After weeks of watching verzuz battles, Instagram live shows and trying to get an invite to clubhouse, I finally got my chance. I hopped on the opportunity to perform for a hit songwriter who pretty much wrote the soundtrack of my childhood. And I was truly stunned by the amazing response I received for the performance of my original song. Under the press for more music, I recorded my first demo while continuing to write. And once I had music on deck, I did the most to get it heard which meant lots of cold emailing and direct messaging. Fortunately enough with diligent outreach, I was able to connect with the talented creatives I have on my team today. Not only was I honored by this experience but it gave me the assurance, guidance, and motivation to pursue a career in music bridging the gap between my dreams and reality.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, it has not been a smooth journey. But staying faith-filled and maintaining a positive mindset certainly helps. At a young age music became apart of my identity and very much my solace when coping with a series of health concerns and chronic conditions. And I can assure you that music will break through the hardest! Although struggling with health issues is not optimal, I try to hang onto finding the positive in every situation. Even though I’ve faced a number of obstacles throughout my life and career, I strive to carry over that same outlook. Believing that good will come through the toughest of times. And what I’ve also learned is planning our lives isn’t in our power because something as simple as graduating and going off to college or being able to drive and work a normal job doesn’t always happen for everybody and that’s okay too. While looking ahead, I’m entirely grateful for everything that has happened up until this moment. Equally thankful for the opened and closed doors. I encourage everyone to not let limitations, false hopes, rejection, failure, or lack of fruition deter you from your path because nothing happens by mistake. Most importantly, remember what is meant for you will be yours. Ultimately I hope this can be a reminder that the trials we face are the building blocks for our future, and though there will be setbacks it’s the way you rise up that determines the distance you’ll go.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Being a singer-songwriter/ independent artist, your almost always working. From writing and recording sessions to strategizing and branding there always something that needs to be done. On the daily, I write music for myself but it’s especially nice when I get to contribute to another artist’s journey helping bring their stories to life. In terms of writing, I believe what sets me apart from others is my approach. Kind of similar to method acting, I focus on the detail of each concept as if they were my own experiences so that the message of the song can be accurately depicted. Whether writing a pop anthem or a vulnerable ballad paying attention to the smallest detail always makes for a lovely product. As per my artistry, I think my tone sets me apart from others, being heavily inspired by artists like Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, and Sade to name of few, I strive to bring a sense of nostalgia into my own records. Not only focusing on the music but the way my style coheres with my sound and aesthetic. Mainly the goal being to blend my love for vintage sound with the beauty of this modern era and relay it into my projects.

What are your plans for the future?
With hopes of being in it for the long haul, I’d love to release an album and tour! But until then, I’m grateful for how far I’ve come from building my reputation as a songwriter to now preparing for the release of my debut single “Go Bad”! As an artist, I can honestly say I’m pursuing a career I only dreamed of and hope you’ll follow along too!
