Conversations with Verena Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Verena Lake.

Hi Verena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Heyy, it’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you for having me and allowing me to share my story. Here’s how I got started…

After my first semester at university while I was on summer break, I quickly realized how expensive it is to live in the US. My grandfather helps to take care of me, but I knew that I didn’t want to be solely dependent on him.

Before coming to America, I already knew what Independence felt like. I had a job and my own place, so it was a shock to go from that place of independence to being dependent again and I know that I didn’t want to stay there.

The thing is, I couldn’t get a regular job even if I wanted to, so I had to get creative. That’s why I started searching for how to make money online. This was a big topic around the time because it was at the start of the pandemic and people were already starting to lose their jobs.

That’s when I found my first business mentor’s Instagram page – Brother Ben X. He had this digital real estate course and it sounded like it perfectly aligned with what I wanted to do. So I sent in an application and one of his team members called me and I joined the course.

I started with $150 and my laptop. I stayed in his program for about a year and a half. During that time, I started a YouTube channel because I thought I was going to be a makeup influencer but that flopped…

Later, I wrote my first book ‘Inner Entrepreneur: The shifts that you must take to start your entrepreneurial Journey’. I wrote it during the summer of 2020. Later that year, I started working with one of the other course participants as an email VA (keep this in mind). I started selling my book the following year May 4th, 2021.

That was the first time I ever made money online. And even when book sales started to dry up, I didn’t give up on this entrepreneurial journey because I could feel like there was something more for me and I was called to help people in a higher way.

So I sold a few master classes and I created my first physical product which was The Wealth planner. Now, this is a part of my business journey worth mentioning because I learned so much from that process.

I learned the art of selling, the importance of a people-first approach in business and how to be more confident in myself. (Shoutout to my current business coach, Shawn Idom, for helping me with that)

But something still felt off…

And that’s when my email marketing skills came ‘full circle’. I was always good at writing to the point where some of my closest friends would ask me to read over their stuff and help them to write emails because it always sounded good.

But I didn’t think much of my skill at the time because I felt like ‘everybody knows how to do this’. However, later down in my business journey, I realized not everybody knows how to do this and not everybody likes writing.

So it was this year that I really took that leap of faith to listen to that voice inside of me and pivot in my business to do email marketing. And honestly, since I made that decision so many opportunities keep coming my way!

Now I’m an email marketing copywriter and list manager. I help brands sell their products through storytelling email marketing so that they make more money.

It all started from
• investing in myself
• learning the fundamentals of business
• not giving up
• listening to my gut and
• having a mentor at every step of the way to help me make important decisions and save time and money from learning everything on my own.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! My biggest struggles were finances, imposter syndrome, and lack of experience.

I had to use some money my education loan (don’t let my grandfather find out he’ll be mad lol). And didn’t get a full ROI.

I ordered 100 custom planners and didn’t sell all. But that was a tough choice I had to make when pivoting because selling the planners became a distraction from building my higher-tier services.

So even if I didn’t get the $4k + I projected for the planner sales, I got priceless experience in return.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I use the power of my words to help business owners get people to exchange their hard-earned money for their products/ services. So the customers get the transformations they yearn for, and the business owners make more money.

I’m known for writing captivating emails that resonate with a brand’s audience so that they get to know, like, and trust the business more.

What I’m most proud of is helping entrepreneurs form long last connections with their audiences. I made it my mission to bring back the emotion in business because too many businesses send mind-numbing, generic messages and treat their customers like numbers.

Only sending ‘Shop Now’ emails and don’t know anything about the reader on the other side of the screen.

So that’s what I’m focused on right now – constantly upgrading the Engagement to Payment Package so that I give my clients a dazzling experience and help them be more successful.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Absolutely! Learned how to be resourceful and that there’s ALWAYS an opportunity. And if you don’t see one… you haven’t looked hard enough.

Also learned it’s best to be self-sufficient because the government is not going to take care of you. We’re all responsible for our own well-being.

Pricing:

  • I give free email audits to business so that they can increase their email sales and engagement
  • $797 intro rate for new signature email service – The Engagement to Payment Package
