Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobias.
Hi Tobias, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I originally moved to Los Angeles to become a Professional Dancer. After being in town for three weeks, I secured my first two jobs which was a Burger King Commercial and a music video with Aaliyah. From that point on it was on. I worked as a Professional Dancer for 15 years. I had the opportunity to work with a plethora of artists and actors: Missy Elliott, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Tom Cruise, Will Ferrell, Lady Gaga, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, TLC, NSync, Brandy, and Pussycat Dolls to name a few. Through all of the years of traveling around the world, I became fascinated with the different cuisines that I was able to partake in. I have always loved to cook and to experience different types of food. I had the opportunity to move to Barbados in 2013 to began work on a music project. While living on the island, I began my first catering company. It was a great experience that taught me a lot about the business side of food. I moved back to Los Angeles in 2017 and began to freelance with various catering companies around town. This experience gave me a plethora of education and experience that would inevitably help me with starting my company, Urban Gent’s Catering, in 2018. I began primarily as a meal prep company but quickly added the catering and private chef sectors to the business. I have been extremely Blessed to elevate my company in such a short amount of time. I have done all sorts of jobs from on set catering for television and film, corporate catering, private chef work for celebrities, a weekly Pop Up Cafe in North Hollywood, and my meal prep program. I recently started a new initiative, Food For Soul, which is a program that feeds the Homeless Community in Van Nuys, North Hollywood, and Hollywood. We strive to provide our homeless brothers and sisters with a restaurant caliber meal, as we believe that Everyone Deserves A Good Meal. With the homeless epidemic running rampant in Los Angeles, I felt that the least I could do to be of service is to provide a meal and basic essentials to this community. I am currently working on a cookbook and a line of spices.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road to success is NEVER smooth. That’s why the victory of Accomplishment is Always so Sweet. I first of all moved to Los Angeles with $40 in my pocket. I was able to pay my first and last month’s rent, and that was it. I had no idea if I was going to come out here and make it or not, but what I did know was that Failure Was Never An Option!!! From being a professional dancer to then transitioning into the Culinary World, the journey has been a hard and adamant fought journey. I am the type of individual who loves a challenge and once my mind is tapped into the Dream, then there’s No Stopping Me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a Creative Being. I am a Choreographer/Dancer, Chef, Artist, Creative Director, and Designer. I have a burgeoning clothing brand, UnDivided Attention that will start as a custom t-shirt and sweatshirt line and then develop into an actual unisex Clothing Line. I specialize in All Things Creative. My current focus is growing my catering company, Urban Gent’s Catering. I am also developing a cookbook, “Taste Of Tobias”, and my very own custom Seasoning Brand. I am most proud of my willingness and for having the courage to go for everything I conjure up in my mind to achieve. It’s an amazing feeling to have an idea, take the necessary steps to make this idea come into fruition, and then put in the work to make it all Successful, there’s no better feeling. I am also very proud of having the self-belief, self-confidence, and tenacity to formulate a plan to make it out of Kingston, Georgia, which is a town of 1200/1300 people, and then come to Los Angeles and become successful in my professional dance/choreography career, and with Urban Gent’s Catering. The sky is the Limit. I have so much more to accomplish.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The advice I would give is to never take the word “No” as a personal jab or a personal assessment of your talent. If you want to accomplish something, you have to go for it, No Matter What. Study your craft. Take the necessary classes, and do the necessary training so that when the right opportunities present itself, you are prepared and ready. Stay Ready, so you Don’t Have To Get Ready. Also, find a mentor that is on the level within your field that you are aspiring to reach. Remember, The Sky Is The Limit.
