Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Bolland.
Rebecca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Even if I haven’t always realized it, fashion has been a major part of my life. After casually following the fashion industry, I entered college with the goal of becoming a fashion designer. I graduated with a double major from the fashion program in fashion design and merchandising. I worked around in retail environments that included menswear, women’s luxury, and secondhand clothing, attempting to find where I wanted to go in the industry. My husband encouraged me to specifically pursue sustainability in the industry; he convinced me to pull on the tread and see what unraveled. After a few years of making my own looks, I was invited to showcase with RAW Artists here in Orange County and later with Flying Solo at New York Fashion Week.
Ever since I was a kid and knew what it was, I wanted to show at New York Fashion Week; I had even told myself in college that it would be cool to showcase a collection there before I turned 30. It was a dream realized when I was walking down a glossy runway on a rooftop in Soho on Broadway. After the show, I walked down seven flights of stairs (in heels!) and contemplated everything that I had to learn to handle, like my stress and anxiety. It wasn’t at all what I expected, but I had an incredible time and look forward to doing it again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never a smooth road, regardless of your industry or destination. I’ve had setbacks, funding problems, and anxiety. I’ve been fired from jobs, I’ve been turned down from jobs that I thought I was a good fit for. Even though it’s been hard, I am grateful for the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Because of them, I’ve grown as an artist and as a businesswoman.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in women’s contemporary fashion and creating beautiful and timeless looks that are full of color. At the moment, I am primarily creating bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces of clothing. I am the most focused on personal fit, fabric choices, and an attention to the needs of each person I design for.
My goals when creating something completely unique are usually based on themes and inspirational pieces I have curated in my mind and my life. I love coming up with creative ideas for my clients and for new looks and concepts in fashion. I have always been inspired by classic and feminine silhouettes that can stand the test of time. I believe that the future of fashion will be hand in hand with sustainability. In my opinion and artistic vision, I think good designs stand the test of time and can be worn over and over again. I aim to put beauty within reach of every woman who wears my stuff.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I believe major and essential changes are on the horizon. So many changes are needed across the entire industry of fashion and all interconnected industries as well. I was very inspired by the documentary, The True Cost, that outlined and highlighted some of the worst issues in the fashion industry. From human rights violations and carcinogenic chemical usage with no safety protocols to abusive work environments blew my mind. Drinking water and landscapes are devastated by the consumer’s thirst for something quick and cheap that don’t last more than a few wears. I believe that sustainable changes can be for the better of customers, for our communities, and for our world as a whole. I feel consumers need to be encouraged and know with confidence that the pieces that they buy are WORTH it. Not something that will fall apart and ends up contributing to more waste. I believe that sustainable, well-made, and timeless beauty should be accessible to everyone because that is what is needed to correct the fast fashion industry.
