Conversations with Queenie Li

Today we’d like to introduce you to Queenie Li.

Hi Queenie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started at Remote Control Productions as an intern in 2016. It was a thrilling experience having recently graduated from my master’s and moved out to Los Angeles from New York not knowing anyone in the city. I think the fact that I was so wide-eyed, eager to learn and meet people in the music industry fueled my energy to hustle. My five weeks internship at RCP turned into another five weeks with composer Henry Jackman, then I became a studio runner. While I was determined to become a film/ TV composer at the time, it was definitely a struggle at the time as an implant from Hong Kong and tried to find a way in such a competitive industry. In February 2017, I had an interview with composer Lorne Balfe for a position at 14th Street Music. My role as a music production coordinator then started with the team. Lorne is the most hard-working, charismatic and talented composer I know and had the pleasure to work with in my past seven six years. There was never a dull moment. We have worked on a wide range of projects, to name a few: Le Mans (Amazon documentary series), Marcella (Netflix Crime series), Mission Impossible Fallout (Paramount/ Skydance), His Dark Materials (HBO), Black Widow (Marvel), The Wheel of Time (HBO). Despite the pandemic, the company continues to grow exponentially and I’m grateful to be where I am at today as VP Production at 14th Street Music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve made mistakes along the way and am still embarrassed by them to this day! And sometimes it’s about how big you see your mistake is. While keeping a journal helps as a reminder.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
14th Street Music is a music production company specialized in TV, Film, video game and commercials, headed by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, Lorne Balfe and Steve Kofsky. My role as VP Production oversees all projects throughout the entire post-production process and ensures creative deliverables are executed. My day to day tasks include building music budgets, booking musicians and recording stages, reading scripts, producing soundtrack albums, act as the team leader across projects and point person between clients and our company. I take pride in getting to work with a team of talented composers, musicians, engineers and assistants across US and Europe. I love the fact that my role is a combination of creative and business management, which is essentially my background growing up known as the pianist in my class with a business major degree.
