Conversations with Martin Majano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martin Majano.

Nestled in the courtyard of a Spanish style condo development called Terramour sits North Menswear San Clemente. The brainchild of Martin Majano. Building a passion for fashion as a child, Martin always knew that he would work in the industry as a kid. Dating back to his years in San Francisco where he was born, to his life in New York where his love for men’s apparel grew. One day back in 2006, he and a friend were smoking cigars at a popular midtown lounge called De La Concha. His friend Fransico Cepin asked him a question that would forever change the course of his life and that was “If you could change your career to do whatever you wanted to do, what would it be?” Martin without hesitation replied to him ” I would build a shop that focused on American Made goods. I would curate it with apparel, accessories, home goods and different artifacts that exude the Americana lifestyle.” Francisco then asked “What would it look like?” Martin quickly replied “It would look rustic, lived in. Think of a hunters club or a beach bungalow. The decor would have repurposed shelving, tables and antiques.”

Fast forward to 2013 when Martin stumbled upon North Menswear, then owned by Pete Surprenant. Martin was quickly transported to the conversation he had at the cigar lounge and was instantly enamored by North Menswear. After years of working with notable brands such as Prada, Apple, Louis Vuitton, Omega Watches, Brioni and John Varvatos, Martin took ownership of North Menswear at the end of January 2020. He is carrying the torch to bring North Menswear to the forefront of men’s fashion in Orange County. The focus for North is American Made and local brands from San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Beach, San Diego and Los Angeles. There are several brands made in other states as well. Martin truly feels that people should invest in their wardrobes as most of the brands that are carried in North are heritage and quality brands. In November of 2020, Martin and his team of shop managers (Alec Williams and Julian Majano) opened up their second location in San Clemente. They have been working hard to make it their mission to bring the same timeless and classic goods to another beach city. The North team has a vision to open up several more shops along coastal cities on the west coast. From San Diego all the way up to Washington state. It’s not every day that people find their life’s passion. In this case, their true north!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
2020 has proven to be a challenge for everyone. Being located in Laguna Beach has its benefits as the clientele is truly local but that did not stop the team at North to pivot and preemptively focus on digital. They upped their game by revamping the website, launching an app on the Apple App Store and Google store, creating The Look of the Week videos as well as offering pick up and delivery services. They also opened up to international shipping. Martin also collaborated with local artist Ali Sabet and the team at Omniprint International to create a small business campaign that proved to be successful. With every sale of the collaboration, 20% was donated to a small business in need of the help.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of North Menswear. A multi-brand clothing, apparel and home goods brand that focuses on American Made goods. We also put a focus on locally made goods. Roughly 80% of the goods carried in North Menswear are American made or locally made. We are very proud of the heritage and quality brands that we have at both our Laguna Beach location and our newly opened San Clemente location. What sets us apart from everyone else is that we offer very obscure brands that are not ubiquitous. We have a buy now wear now approach to our merchandising. We also have a laid back shopping experience where we put the individual first and not product. We want people to really enjoy their visit to North. We offer a selection of beverages to keep our customers feeling welcomed as they are walking into our home. We love to play host. We want to build community and our second location in San Clemente was designed to be just that. A think tank where people can come and brain storm and bounce ideas off one another. We invite creativity. Not to mention the rooftop where we can host amazing events. Lastly, we truly embrace community especially during these times as we align ourselves with brands that give back to charity or we do fun things where we treat people to a coffee or lunch with some of the local businesses in town. Come and pay us a visit and find out for yourself.
