Conversations with Kim Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Serrano.

Kim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The inspiration for In Control Cosmetics was to introduce a healthy and affordable line of makeup suitable for all skin tones. I wanted a line that complements ALL skin tone shades, free from allergies, free from toxins and it is affordable for everyone to buy.

My journey started four years ago. I wanted to update and switch out my makeup products from what I was wearing at the time. I am not big on wearing makeup daily but I was fond of eyeshadows, mascaras, blushes, lipsticks, and lip glosses. I am currently allergic to dairy, wheat, and soy. The struggle is real, trying to find clean makeup, especially with lipsticks, lipglosses & blushes that are vegan, gluten-free, talc-free, affordable and complements my beautiful medium dark skin tone. I needed products that are made in the USA and are allergy and toxin-free.

So my journey with my two years old (at the time) began, searching from store to store (department and drug stores) trying to find a blush and a lipstick/lipgloss in the same brand especially for African American individuals with medium to dark skin tones, that is healthy, free from allergies, made in the US and affordable. Honestly, it is just hard! From there, I felt it was my job to create a line that is affordable, natural and sultry at the same time. On January 4, 2021, In Control Cosmetics was born. I wanted all of my Queens to take control of their makeup. In Control Cosmetics are affordable, complement all skin tones, are vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, paraben-free, talc-free and free from cross contamination while made in the USA.

I am happy to announce that In Control Cosmetics has collaborated with My Beauty Box last fall. My company did participate in a pop-up shop back in February during black history month in South Los Angeles. It is very important for other individuals to look at me as a black successful women and to see that anyone can dream. Anyone can succeed from their aspirations if they are ambitious, willing to be patient, hard-working, will not take “no” for an answer while putting their minds into anything that they believe in.

Currently, In Control Cosmetics can be purchased online at https://whencontrolandcouturecollide.com/

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am so blessed to have my family and my friends (who are like my family) who continue to support my businesses since day one while continuing to be my loyal customers.

The best part of my business was the fact that I finance my own company. Meaning I did not take out any loans in order to keep my companies afloat. No one owns both In Control Cosmetics and Queen Kimmy In Control Of Couture but me.

I love the fact I get to promote while educating my customers about the importance of healthy makeup, knowing where our makeup is being made and meeting their individual needs as a consumer.

Some of my challenges and obstacles were trying to get my brand out there, especially being a new black-owned makeup business. I would love to collaborate with other brands while hopefully, they can see the value of my brand without losing my identity during the process. Balancing it all while trying to keep calm during the chaos. My time management while balancing it all in this business is a must. I currently work full-time as a Substitute Teacher, part-time as a one-on-one tutor, and attending school part-time as an early childhood special education credential student.

I am happily married with our awesome six year old son Warren. My husband Robert is my biggest supporter. We make sure that our son does remain on task while completing his homework assignments and taking him to his extra curriculum activities while enjoying our quality time together.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In addition to being a Business Owner. I am currently a Substitute Teacher. I have working in the field of education for over seventeen years. I am proud of what I am doing as an Educator. I love what to do and it shows daily. I am also an early childhood special education credential student at California State University Dominguez Hills. There is a huge need for special education teachers, especially with educators of color. I love working with children and from all walks of life. My goal is for all of my students and their parents to take what they have learned for me and apply it in their day to day lives.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Michelle Obama – Becoming

Barack Obama – A Promised Land

I enjoy reading both books from time to time because it is reliable to me.

Michelle and Barack faced obstacles throughout their lifetime in order to become the successful individuals they are today. I have a lot of admiration and respect for both of them.
